FlyQuest, KRAFTON, and Arbitrum Gaming Ventures have jointly invested $3.5 million USD in Dallas-based Psychedelic Games’ emerging gaming project Golden Tides, according to an official press release. Golden Tides is a pirate-themed 4v4 adventure MOBA in development for PC, with future plans for distribution on other platforms.
The investment is aimed at supporting the development and expansion of Golden Tides. Psychedelic Games stated that they bypassed traditional venture capital entirely, opting instead for strategic partners whose industry positioning could directly serve the game's commercial trajectory.
Psychedelic Games CEO Devin Richman positioned the title as the evolution of MOBA and said that the funding will help bring that experience to players around the world. “Golden Tides asks what a MOBA looks like when you strip away the constraints and rebuild around freedom, exploration, and the chaos of naval combat,” he stated further.
KRAFTON’s participation is particularly significant, given its track record with globally successful titles such as PUBG and BGMI. Psychedelic Games COO Mason Richman stated that KRAFTON’s “unwavering focus on creating fun, great games above everything else made the partnership feel natural from day one.”
How Does Golden Tides Gameplay Redefine MOBAs?
The current development team of Golden Tides brings together industry veterans who have worked on titles like PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, League of Legends, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and the like.
Unlike traditional MOBAs' lengthy match structures, this title offers 20-25 minute-long bouts, featuring open-world exploration mechanics, where crews determine their course of action. The roaster supports more than 12 characters, spread across various roles such as damage, aspiring pirates, tank, and support roles. The ultimate goal is to collect as many treasures as possible.
As per the press release, “Golden Tides delivers a fresh take on a genre whose core structure has remained largely unchanged … until now,” with its combination of MOBA and open-world elements. FlyQuest CEO Brian Anderson has hinted at building a possible competitive ecosystem around the game.
“We love the competitive potential of Golden Tides and our hope is that this first-of-its-kind investment sets a new standard for how esports organizations and game studios collaborate” emphasized Anderson about their long-term partnership with Psychedelic Games. While specific gameplay mechanics weren’t announced, Arbitrum Gaming Ventures partner Dan Peng praised the innovative gameplay and “fast-paced MOBA-inspired controls” of Golden Tides.
The Golden Tides funding round highlights a shifting investment landscape in gaming, where traditional publishers, esports entities, and blockchain gaming ventures are increasingly intersecting for extended gain. As of writing, no possible release window has been mentioned.
