Highlights

  • Nintendo’s Pokémon Pokopia triggered a 15% stock surge after 2.2 million sales in four days.
  • As the highest-rated franchise title, Nintendo’s Pokémon Pokopia is a certified Switch 2 hit.
  • Global shortages of Nintendo’s Pokémon Pokopia have successfully reversed the console's sluggish momentum.

Nintendo just caught a massive break. In a whirlwind week for the gaming industry, the surprise success of the newly released Switch 2 exclusive, Nintendo’s Pokémon Pokopia, has driven Nintendo's stock up by nearly 15% in just two days. The game's explosive launch has rapidly cleared retailer shelves worldwide, successfully reversing the new console's sluggish early momentum and providing a vital sigh of relief for shareholders who have endured months of financial whiplash.

The financial turnaround paints the picture of a certified blockbuster. Nintendo’s shares climbed from ¥8,606 ($54.37) on Monday to ¥9,932 ($62.74) by Wednesday's close. According to Bloomberg reports, the stock hit a 10.5% intraday peak on Wednesday, marking its biggest gain since April 2025. This massive rally interrupts a harsh downward trend where shares had plummeted over 40% in just six months, dropping from a November 2025 peak of ¥14,105 ($89.09) to a low of ¥8,350 ($52.74) this past February.

The numbers behind the game's initial launch are staggering. Retailing for $69.99, Pokémon Pokopia managed to sell 2.2 million copies globally within exactly four days of its March 5 release, with one million of those units sold in Japan alone. This unexpected high demand immediately led to widespread physical shortages, with copies vanishing from the shelves of major US retailers like Walmart, Target, and GameStop, alongside stores in the UK and Australia.

The inventory drought was so severe that Amazon even raised the price of available physical copies. Co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, the game currently boasts an 89 on Metacritic, making it the highest-rated title in the franchise's 30-year history, as per Game Rant.

Why Nintendo’s Pokémon Pokopia is a "Dark Horse"

Hideki Yasuda, a senior analyst at Toyo Securities, called the game a "dark horse" that caught investors entirely off guard. Departing from the franchise's traditional turn-based combat, Pokémon Pokopia is an unconventional, cozy life simulator where players control a shape-shifting Ditto mimicking a human to cultivate a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Prior to this rally, market watchers were deeply concerned about the economic headwinds facing Nintendo. Spiking RAM shortages, AI data center costs, and revamped U.S. tariffs threatening global console sales had all dealt blows to the Japanese gaming giant. Jefferies analyst Atul Goyal praised the title as a "stealth hit" that is easing those memory cost fears by surging Switch 2 adoption.

However, a good deal of doubt still hovers over the company's long-term future. Nintendo's stock still sits roughly 30% below its 2025 record of ¥14,795 ($93.41), and company president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that a Switch 2 price hike is not off the table if the RAM crisis persists. While a full recovery will require more sustained victories, Nintendo and its shareholders can finally exhale as Pokopia continues to smash expectations.
