Capcom’s survival horror masterpiece, Resident Evil Requiem, has officially rocketed past the 7 million sales mark worldwide. Reaching this massive milestone in just under two months since its February release, the highly anticipated title is now the fastest-selling entry in the franchise's 30-year history. The game wasted no time rewriting the franchise playbook, moving a staggering 5 million copies in its first five days alone to mark the most explosive start for any Resident Evil game ever.
Capcom's official updates tracked the momentum climbing to 6 million by mid-March, before surging by another million to hit the new 7 million benchmark in late April. To put that blistering pace into perspective, the highly successful 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake took 10 months to reach roughly 6.48 million units.
This unprecedented launch has already left a serious mark on the gaming industry. According to industry tracker Circana, Requiem now ranks among the top five best-selling Resident Evil games of all time in terms of lifetime United States dollar sales. It currently trails only behind legacy juggernauts like Resident Evil 5, the recent Resident Evil 4 remake, Resident Evil Village, and the original Resident Evil 4.
This massive surge was heavily driven by a simultaneous launch across all major platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and the Nintendo Switch 2, capitalizing on the massive, multi-million-selling success of the series' recent renaissance.
Capcom Celebrates With Custom Character Cakes
To celebrate this passionate community and the record-breaking numbers, Game Director Koshi Nakanishi took to Instagram to share photos of a studio party featuring two towering, custom-made cakes modeled after the game's dual protagonists. One was a tribute to returning fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy, featuring black icing, blueberries, and raspberries, complete with a biscuit-based topper shaped like Leon wielding a pistol and his trusty hatchet. Shared with the message, "Welcome to 7m Leon!"
Meanwhile, newcomer Grace Ashcroft’s cake featured white frosting and a creepy zombie hand reaching out of the second tier, wrapped with the message, "Grace Congratulations on 7 million!,” as per IGN.
Beyond the initial purchase, players are deeply invested in surviving the nightmare Capcom has created. Recent achievement data shows an incredibly strong engagement rate, proving gamers are actually finishing the terrifying campaign rather than just buying into the hype. On Steam, an impressive 70% of all players have unlocked the achievement for completing the main storyline, with 90% of Xbox players, while PlayStation 5 data reveals a similarly high completion rate of nearly 67%.
Happily, fans still have plenty more to look forward to. A mysterious content update arriving next month is widely expected to introduce a new version of the franchise’s beloved Mercenaries mode, a rumor heavily fueled by a recent datamine leak that revealed tense new music. Following that, a full-blown story DLC is also in the works, ensuring Resident Evil Requiem shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.
