Highlights
- Silksong sales hit 7 million, setting a new record for the Metroidvania genre.
- Millions more joined via Game Pass, pushing total players beyond direct purchases.
- Team Cherry announces "Sea of Sorrow," a free expansion arriving in 2026.
The long wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong has culminated in a historic achievement for Australian developer Team Cherry. The studio announced that their highly anticipated sequel has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide in just over three months since its launch on September 4, 2025. This milestone accounts strictly for direct purchases across PC and consoles, meaning the actual player base is significantly larger when factoring in the "millions more" who have accessed the title through subscription services like Xbox Game Pass.
The Silksong sales data highlights a record-breaking performance for the indie sector, firmly establishing the title as the biggest launch ever tracked in the Metroidvania genre. Priced at a modest $20, the game generated approximately $50 million in revenue on Steam, moving over 3 million copies on that platform.
By the third day post-release, the total player count had already surged to 5 million across all platforms. The demand was so intense on launch day that it reportedly crashed Steam storefronts and caused temporary outages on several digital shops, proving it was one of the most wishlisted games prior to its release.

Silksong Sales vs. Industry Giants
While Silksong is a massive success, the numbers offer an interesting contrast to other recent hits. For context, industry giant Battlefield 6 moved a similar million units in just three days, highlighting the sheer scale of AAA releases. On the indie side, the breakout hit Peak has reached 14 million sales since its launch.
Despite these comparisons, Team Cherry described their own figures as "staggering", noting that the player count far exceeded their internal expectations. They credited this momentum to the dedicated community that supported them with art, mods, and enthusiasm during the game's lengthy development cycle.
Looking ahead, Team Cherry has lifted the curtain on the game's next major chapter, a brand-new expansion dubbed Sea of Sorrow. Currently in development and scheduled for release in 2026, this major content update will add new areas, bosses, and items to the kingdom of Pharloom.
In a move celebrated by fans, the developers confirmed that the DLC will be free for all players on all platforms. "Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further," the studio said.
