Sony Eyes AI Frame Generation for Future PlayStation Hardware

Whether Sony AI frame generation is planned for the PS5 Pro or PS6 remains unclear.

Highlights

  • Sony is developing ML-based frame generation.
  • Mark Cerny says the feature “should be seen” on PlayStation platforms, with no releases planned this year.
  • ML-based frame generation differs from FSR3 in that it predicts frames with AI rather than interpolating.

Sony is preparing machine-learning-based frame generation for future PlayStation platforms. The company has not yet confirmed whether the technology will arrive on PS5 Pro or on a next-generation console. PlayStation lead architect, Mark Cerny, said an equivalent frame-generation library is planned. He added that it “should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms,” though implementation details remain unclear.

The capability is being developed through Sony’s collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst.

Cerny confirmed that “an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms,” but declined to specify which systems would support it. He also clarified that “we have no more releases planned for this year,” indicating the rollout is not imminent.

Sony recently updated PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution on PS5 Pro. The change fueled speculation that additional AI-driven features could arrive through software updates.

Sony has also discussed future hardware with dedicated ray tracing components called Radiance Cores. This leaves the possibility open that ML-based frame generation could be reserved for a next-generation console.

AI Frame Generation vs Existing Console Techniques

Current PlayStation titles already use AMD FSR3 frame generation in select cases, but that approach interpolates frames without machine learning. The proposed ML-based version would instead predict new frames, similar to PC implementations often described as generating “fake frames.” This technique generally requires stable base frame rates and is not intended to fix low-performance scenarios.

Cerny also addressed speculation about Sony patents related to adaptive AI upscaling, stating that those concepts are not part of current PSSR or FSR work.

Sony has not identified the first platform for ML-based frame generation. The feature remains in development and could arrive on PS5 Pro or future PlayStation hardware such as PS6.
