Microsoft has delayed Fable to February 2027, moving the role-playing game out of its previously planned autumn 2026 release window. The decision lands as Xbox prepares to ship several major titles across the second half of 2026.
Xbox announced the change on May 29, 2026, through its official account. The company said the holiday calendar is crowded with releases including Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI), and said it moved Fable to give the game a clearer runway.
Xbox said the move was meant to plan its holiday launches in a way that works best for players and to give Fable the "dedicated moment it deserves."
The company did not name any single title as the reason for the delay. The shift removes Fable from a window expected to be dominated by blockbuster launches, GTA VI among them.
Fable remains part of Xbox Games Showcase
Xbox said Fable will still get a major new showing at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, where players can expect a fresh look at the RPG alongside updates on the company's wider lineup.
Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty said the game is progressing well. In a video posted by Xbox, Booty said the team feels good about where the project stands and that Xbox wants the game to launch in a window of its own.
Playground Games is developing the reboot. The studio gave its first in-depth look at the project at the Xbox Developer_Direct in January 2026.
Game director Ralph Fulton described Fable then as an open-world action RPG and a new beginning for the franchise. Fulton said the team approached the game as a clean reboot, building "Playground's Fable" while honoring the legacy of Lionhead Studios' original trilogy.
Microsoft had previously targeted a 2026 launch for Fable, though it never announced a specific date. The game is now scheduled for February 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
