BTS draws record-breaking crowds in Mexico City as Latin America becomes the new epicenter for K-pop streaming and stadium tours.

BTS’ Explosive Latin America Surge Stuns the K-pop World

BTS’ latest release signals a bigger industry shift as global fandom power massively tilts toward Spanish and Portuguese-speaking markets.

Highlights

  • Brazil and Mexico crossed South Korea in first-week streams for BTS’ Arirang, redefining Latin America as a key K-pop consumption hub.
  • BTS has massive demand across Latin America, with Mexico City alone attracting 150,000 fans over three nights.
  • HYBE is expanding BTS’ Latin American touring strategy as the region becomes a major engine of global K-pop growth.

K-pop’s center is not in the heartland of Seoul anymore, rather it is revolving around the Latin American region. The power dynamics are being rewritten as Brazil and Mexico have officially surpassed South Korea, the homeland of K-pop, in first-week streaming for BTS’ latest studio album, Arirang.

BTS Arirang Streams: Brazil and Mexico Overtake South Korea

Arirang, which was released on March 20, gained a remarkable 739.1 million worldwide audio streams. Although the number trails behind Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl (1.3B), Luminate verifies BTS’ fifth studio album is on its way to achieve the highest first-week total for any 2026 release.

BTS Arirang Audio Streams Album-wise Data from Luminate

According to the music consumption data released on April 14, 2026, the specific streaming hierarchy for Arirang’s debut week was:

Market Contribution Rankings (First-Week Streams)

  1. United States: 115M
  2. Brazil: 78.6M
  3. Mexico: 75.9M
  4. South Korea: 58.3M
  5. Japan: 48.2M

Interestingly, the country-wise figure is an aggregate of both premium and ad-supported streams data that encompasses both audio and video formats. With the numbers for video also included in the report, YouTube naturally emerges as the clearest reflection of this trend, or in other words, market shift. Notably, in between April 6 and May 3, Brazil and Mexico claimed the third and fourth spots in global viewership, while South Korea was pushed down to sixth.

BTS Latin America Tour Demand Reaches Stadium-Level Frenzy

This visceral demand of BTS is equally visible on the ground. For instance, the septet drew 150,000 fans over three nights (May 7 and May 9–10) with sold-out shows in Mexico City. This number is even higher than the attendance recorded in BTS’ Goyang, South Korea (~ 133,000 for three shows) and Tokyo, Japan (~ 110,000 for two shows). Nevertheless, it falls a little short of the Tampa attendance, which drew a total of 190,000 fans to their three-night sold-out concerts at Raymond James Stadium.

The BTS craze in Latin America was further highlighted when the Los Angeles Times reported that an estimated figure of an additional 35,000 ticketless fans gathered outside the venue during the final two evenings of the Mexico City segment. Simultaneously, the cultural footprint also extended into the political sphere on May 6, when 50,000 people flooded the Zocalo square to witness the band meet Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Notably, the government honored the group with a commemorative plaque, solidifying their role as diplomatic icons.

HYBE Expands BTS Latin America Stadium Tour Strategy

As of now, on May 16-17 and 19, BTS will perform at the Stanford Stadium. However, moving forward, the group will tour across Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. Notably, BTS will be the first Korean act to perform in Bogota’s Estadio El Campín and Buenos Aires’ Estadio Unico de La Plata. Remarkably, they are also the first ones to hold a standalone concert at Santiago’s Estadio Nacional. To accommodate the momentum in the region, HYBE had already added extra shows in Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires.

Yonhap, the South Korean media agency, reports that a HYBE official labeled Latin America as a “strategic hub,” which links Asia with both English and Spanish-speaking markets. Given the current statistics, the region is no longer just an emerging market with a potential growth prospect, instead has become a core engine of the industry.
