Highlights

  • KPop Demon Hunters 2 is set for a theatrical release following the first film’s success.
  • Netflix is rethinking its cinema strategy as demand for theatrical experiences grows.
  • The sequel is targeting 2029, with more stories planned for HUNTR/X.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 will receive a theatrical release following the original film’s record-breaking success on Netflix. Netflix co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, confirmed the theatrical plans at Bloomberg Screen Time on Sept. 30, 2026.

The sequel is targeting 2029, although its release date and theatrical window remain unconfirmed.

An Oct. 20 report from The Hollywood Reporter credited former Netflix film chief, Dan Lin, with helping secure the arrangement before he left. Lin had advocated for theatrical releases as audiences increasingly sought cinema experiences, despite Sarandos’ long-standing preference for a streaming-first model.

How Did KPop Demon Hunters Change Netflix’s Strategy?

Released on Netflix on June 20, 2025, KPop Demon Hunters became the platform’s most-watched film. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the animated musical follows fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X, comprising Mira, Rumi, and Zoey, as they protect their fans from demons through music.

The film’s success extended beyond streaming:

  • Its August 2025 sing-along screenings earned approximately $18 million USD over two days. October screenings generated an estimated $5 million to $6 million.
  • Songs including Your Idol, Golden, and Soda Pop gained traction on the Billboard Hot 100. Performers Rei Ami, EJAE, and Audrey Nuna also appeared at live events, including the Oscars.
  • Collaborations with McDonald’s, Fortnite, and LEGO expanded the franchise into consumer products and gaming.
  • Netflix’s online shop recorded a 400% increase in new customers following the film’s release, according to Variety.

Netflix is also expanding theatrical distribution for other projects.

La Bola Negra, acquired at Cannes, earned $277,500 across four screens. Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled for a 49-day exclusive theatrical run in February 2027, with Netflix handling North American distribution and Sony Pictures Entertainment managing international distribution.

What Else is Planned for KPop Demon Hunters?

Netflix and Sony confirmed the sequel in March 2026, after November 2025 reports outlined a 2029 target. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning.

Kang has indicated that future stories could explore unanswered questions and the characters’ backgrounds. She explained to Variety in July 2026, “there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered.” Potential storylines include Mira and Zoey’s histories and further details about the world surrounding HUNTR/X’s mission to protect the Honmoon.

Other projects reported as possibilities include a live-action film, a stage play, a spinoff series, a short film, and another sequel that could complete a trilogy. Netflix has not officially announced these projects.

The franchise’s merchandise expansion also includes a LEGO and Netflix collaboration featuring a Derpy Tiger model made from nearly 37,000 bricks. Designed by LEGO Certified Professional Björn Ramant, the commissioned build was displayed at LEGO World 2026 in Utrecht, Netherlands, through Oct. 21. The official Derpy Tiger and Sussie Bird set contains 825 pieces, originally priced at $69.99, with Amazon listing it for $56.

The theatrical commitment allows Netflix to build on the franchise’s existing audience while testing whether its streaming successes can also sustain cinema demand.
