Console Exclusives Still Matter, but Their Influence is Slipping
Exclusive games are losing their grip on console buyers, even as God of War and Helldivers 2 show their sales power.
Highlights
- According to Circana's Q1 2026 survey, 41% of U.S. gamers choose consoles for exclusives.
- God of War Ragnarök spiked PS5 sales by 116% in Japan, yet attracted only 300K PC players at launch compared to 6.9M on PlayStation.
- Both Microsoft and Sony are reassessing exclusivity, with Xbox reevaluating first-party releases.
Console exclusives remain the primary driver for players choosing gaming consoles, but their influence is weakening as platform strategies shift. According to Circana’s Q1 2026 Future of Video Games consumer survey, 41% of U.S. gamers say exclusive titles are their main reason for playing on consoles. This represents an 8% point decline compared to the previous year.
The data emerges as Microsoft and Sony continue to reassess how exclusivity fits into broader distribution plans. Xbox’s leadership team, including Asha Sharma and Matt Booty, stated in an internal memo that the company is reevaluating its release strategy after expanding first-party launches to competing platforms.
Reports also indicate Sony may reduce PC releases for its single-player titles, signaling a potential recalibration toward console-focused launches.
Console Exclusives vs Multiplatform Expansion
The Circana findings, highlighted by The Game Business, show exclusives still rank above other factors influencing platform choice. Social considerations follow, with 38% of players choosing consoles because friends and family use the same platform. Ease of multiplayer access accounts for 37%, while 36% prefer consoles for casual play environments.
Sales data continues to support the role of exclusives in driving hardware adoption. The launch of God of War Ragnarök led to a 116% weekly increase in PS5 sales in Japan. In the UK, 38% of PS5 units sold that month were bundled with the game.
However, third-party franchises such as Call of Duty and FIFA 24 still account for a larger share of console engagement, indicating exclusives are influential but not the sole driver.
Single-player releases have seen lower engagement on PC. God of War Ragnarök drew about 300K players at launch on the platform, compared to 6.9M across PlayStation systems. Similar patterns were observed with Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Forbidden West, though delayed PC releases may have affected results.
A Circana advisor, Mat Piscatella, noted on Bluesky that the survey represents only part of the broader market context, stating that it “isn’t the whole story.”
The findings show exclusives still shape consoles, but declining motivation and mixed multiplatform results are pushing platform holders to adjust their approach.
