Cyberpunk 2077 Sells 35M Copies Outpacing Witcher 3
CD Projekt reported that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 35M copies with strong Q3 earnings, pushing the sci-fi RPG ahead of the studio’s flagship franchise.
Highlights
- Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 35M copies, generating PLN 251M (~$68M) in Q3 2025 and driving CD Projekt’s net revenue of PLN 349M (~$95.6M).
- The sci-fi RPG has now outpaced The Witcher 3’s early commercial performance, with Cyberpunk crossing 35M in five years while The Witcher 3 reached 30M after six.
- The turnaround is attributed to Phantom Liberty, patch improvements, multiplatform releases, and cross-media tie-ins, enabling the brand to sustain long-term engagement.
Polish video game company, CD Projekt Red, has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 35M copies worldwide, surpassing the early-sales trajectory of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Group, on Nov. 26, 2025, confirmed the milestone along with its third-quarter (Q3) revenue report.
According to the CD Projekt Group’s Q3 filing, Cyberpunk 2077 played a central role in driving the company’s revenue. CD Projekt reported PLN 349M (~$95.6M) in consolidated revenue for the quarter, with executives attributing a significant portion to continued Cyberpunk sales, expansion-led engagement, and back-catalog interest.
The title itself generated PLN 251M (~$68M) in Q3 2025, showcasing a 118% year-on-year (YoY) growth. CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski stated, “Cyberpunk 2077 remains such a well-performing title and continues to attract new players,” hinting that the franchise’s enduring power helps them in taking bold steps for its future.
The update marks a dramatic turnaround for the title as well. Its launch in Dec. 2020 faced widespread technical criticism due to platform instability. Despite its turbulent debut, the game has steadily rebuilt momentum through patches, the Phantom Liberty expansion, and a broader multiplatform rollout.
Cyberpunk 2077’s 35M Copies Milestone in Context to The Witcher 3
CD Projekt’s Q3 2025 financials underline how decisively Cyberpunk 2077 has overtaken The Witcher franchise in early-cycle commercial impact. Whereas the title generated over PLN 250M (~$68M) in Q3, the whole The Witcher franchise accounted for only PLN 2.6M (~$7.1M) in revenue. The Witcher franchise also saw a 52% decrease in YoY sales, underscoring that the franchise failed to retain long-term engagement.
Cyberpunk 2077 reached the 35M mark within five years of its release, whereas the publisher’s famed title, The Witcher 3, crossed the 30M milestone after six years. While the title is far from achieving The Witcher 3’s lifetime total, Cyberpunk 2077’s revenue and post-launch momentum both suggest large-scale RPGs can recover commercially even after difficult debuts.
The company attributes this surge to several factors, along with the critical success of Phantom Liberty, a consistent pipeline of updates, and a multiplatform strategy to push the title in PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, Switch 2, and Mac.
Beyond sales performance, CD Projekt Red’s collaboration strategy has helped extend the title’s cultural reach. Recent partnerships, including anime integrations, cross-media tie-ins, and live experience efforts, contributed to sustained visibility and ongoing engagement. Additionally, the Q3 report also suggests that CD Projekt Red is laying the foundation for its upcoming games: Witcher 4, Cyberpunk 2, Sirius, and Hadar.
