Entrepreneur's latest venture aims to develop title using Grok chatbot, testing limits of artificial intelligence in gaming

Elon Musk said his artificial-intelligence startup xAI plans to release an AI-generated video game by the end of 2026, the latest effort by the entrepreneur to push the boundaries of machine learning technology.

The game would rely on xAI's Grok chatbot to handle design, mechanics and storytelling, a significant test of whether AI can tackle the complex creative and technical demands of game development. Musk announced the project on X, the social-media platform he owns, calling it a demonstration of Grok's creative capabilities.

The move follows xAI's October launch of Grok Imagine Version 0.9, which the company said improved the AI's ability to generate text, images and video. Founded by Musk in 2023, xAI has positioned itself as a competitor to OpenAI and other leaders in the rapidly evolving AI sector.

Gaming Industry Questions Feasibility of AI Development Timeline

Yet the 12-month development timeline has drawn skepticism from gaming industry observers. Early AI-generated footage circulating online has been criticized as rough and unconvincing, with some developers noting that even modest games typically require years of refinement.

Still, Musk's track record of defying conventional wisdom, particularly with SpaceX, which overcame early failures to become a dominant force in aerospace, has tempered some doubts. If successful, the project could reshape game production by automating elements traditionally handled by human designers and writers.

To refine Grok's gaming capabilities, xAI is recruiting what it calls "video game tutors" to train the AI in design principles, player experience and narrative structure. The positions, based in Palo Alto with remote work options, pay between $45 and $100 an hour and focus on evaluating and improving Grok's output to ensure gameplay is both functional and engaging.
