Highlights

  • Author Andy Weir returns to pen a brand-new, official chapter exclusive to this interactive mission.
  • Developed by Maze Theory, the game blends your physical space with the Hail Mary for hands-on survival.
  • Players build a bond with Rocky through physical hand signals and the iconic "fist my bump" mechanic.

Fans of the sci-fi phenomenon Project Hail Mary have a massive reason to celebrate today. Coming off the explosive box office success of the recent Ryan Gosling film adaptation, Amazon MGM Studios and developer Maze Theory have announced Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars. Launching globally in late 2026, this mixed-reality video game isn't just a simple retelling of the story we already know.

The biggest shocker for the fandom is that original author Andy Weir has actually penned an entirely new, canonical chapter specifically for the game. This marks the very first time the franchise has expanded beyond the events of the 2021 bestselling novel and the 2026 smash-hit movie.

Players will strap into their headsets to step directly into the space suit of Ryland Grace during a crucial, previously untold moment of the Hail Mary mission. According to the official blurb, the ship’s systems are actively failing in deep space, and things are growing increasingly uncertain. Because it's a mixed-reality experience, reports have revealed that the physical environment of your own living room will blend with the virtual interior of the Hail Mary spaceship.

You will literally have to reach out with your own hands to diagnose critical problems and improvise science-based fixes under immense pressure, with humanity's survival resting squarely on your shoulders.

Of course, it wouldn't be Project Hail Mary without everyone's favorite alien engineer, Rocky. The core of the game revolves around building that same iconic, cross-species friendship we saw on the page and screen. Through a mix of cooperation and problem-solving, players will have to earn the alien intelligence's trust to survive.

Gameplay footage reveals that you can physically interact with your extraterrestrial buddy using the hand signals made famous by the story. You can give a thumbs up and watch Rocky try his best to respond (even if he occasionally gets confused and gives a thumbs down instead). You can bust out some jazz hands to see him mimic you, and yes, you absolutely get to "fist my bump."

Maze Theory Brings the Hail Mary to Quest and Pico

The studio bringing this to life is Maze Theory, a developer whose name is ironically just one "A" short of being the absolute perfect fit for a game featuring Rocky's favorite catchphrase. They are already heavy hitters in the virtual reality space, having developed highly immersive adaptations for major franchises like Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, and Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows. Now, they are bringing their expertise to major mixed-reality and VR platforms, specifically targeting the Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S, and Pico 4.

For Andy Weir, this interactive adventure is a major milestone for his beloved universe. He noted that fans have been hungry for more since the original book first dropped, calling this game the first real step outside the original narrative and something that could only truly be experienced in mixed reality.

With the movie pulling in over $430 million worldwide since its theatrical release in March 2026, Hollywood is naturally buzzing about turning the property into a larger franchise. However, Weir remains firmly in the driver's seat of his creation. When asked recently by The New York Times about the possibility of a true sequel, he admitted he definitely has ideas for Project Hail Mary follow-ups, but just doesn't have a good enough one to commit to yet.

He also confirmed that his current book project is entirely unrelated to anything he has written before, making Journey Among the Stars the only new Hail Mary content fans will get their hands on for the foreseeable future.
