Say goodbye to hashmarks thanks to the new AI-powered chat system.
Roblox Introduces Smart AI Chat Moderation to Boost Player Safety
The new Roblox AI-powered chat system replaces "####" with real-time rephrasing, making the platform safer while keeping player conversations natural and respectful.
Highlights
- AI-powered chat system replaces "hashmarks" by rephrasing profanity into respectful text in real time.
- The new AI-powered chat system is 20 times more effective at blocking sensitive personal data leaks.
- Roblox's AI-powered chat system guides user behavior without disrupting natural conversation flow.
On March 5, 2026, Roblox officially transformed how its massive community communicates by globally rolling out a new AI-powered chat system. Instead of relying on the platform's infamous wall of hashmarks to censor inappropriate messages, this groundbreaking tool automatically detects and rephrases profanity into respectful language in real time. By seamlessly translating filtered text into cleaner versions, the update represents a major shift toward keeping the virtual environment safe without bringing natural conversations to a screeching halt.
At launch, the system focuses mainly on automatically rewriting profanity in chat while preserving the sender's original intent. For example, instead of showing a confusing string of “#####,” an aggressive message such as “Hurry tf up!” may instantly appear as “Hurry up!” before reaching the rest of the lobby. Roblox says the system is designed to guide user behavior rather than simply block messages entirely, allowing conversations to flow naturally without the disruption often caused by heavy-handed text filtering.
Transparency remains a central pillar of the new feature. "Think of this system as a steering wheel, rather than a stop sign," Roblox noted in a recent blog post. If a message violates platform policy, everyone in the chat is notified that the text has been rephrased to keep things civil, as reported by Pocketgamer.biz.
Roblox explained that by matching restricted words to phrases that users actually use in everyday chat, they can help keep the environment respectful without losing the authentic feel of the community. “Chat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox,” said Rajiv Bhatia, vice president of User and Discovery Product at Roblox.

Enhancing Moderation Accuracy and Player Safety
Designed to protect a growing user base of a million daily active users, the majority of whom are under 16, the system is already delivering strong results. Early data reveal the system is 20 times more effective at intercepting attempts to share sensitive data, such as phone numbers or social media handles, compared to previous filters. The tool currently functions across all languages available through Roblox’s automatic translation tools.
To maintain a fair and balanced environment, the AI system integrates directly with the platform's existing moderation tools. This builds on strategies introduced in May 2025, when Roblox launched proactive, real-time warnings to help users understand policies and prompt them to reconsider their language. Experiments from that rollout showed real promise: issuing these in-experience text chat notifications and time-outs resulted in a 5% reduction in filtered chat messages and a 6% drop in consequences from abuse reports.
By pairing the new AI rephrasing with these proven methods, Roblox is attempting to ensure that users are guided toward better behavior, while persistent offenders who repeatedly try to bypass the rules still face traditional punishments like account suspensions.
The company acknowledged that they are still at the beginning of rephrasing and providing context to users when text is blocked, but promised that, like any AI translation tool, it will become increasingly accurate and nuanced in preserving a user’s original tone over time.
