Roblox Russia ban: Roblox confirms talks with regulators on feature and moderation changes
Highlights
- Roblox is in talks with Roskomnadzor and is prepared to limit features and adjust moderation to meet Russian legal requirements.
- Russia banned the platform on Dec. 3, 2025, over child safety and content concerns, triggering protests and complaints from users.
- Any restoration would be a rare compromise between Russian regulators and a U.S. technology company.
U.S. gaming platform Roblox has said it is prepared to alter parts of its service in Russia as it seeks to reverse a ban imposed earlier this month, Reuters reported. Russia’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, blocked the platform on Dec. 3, 2025, citing child safety concerns, prompting user complaints and rare public protests.
Roskomnadzor said the company had contacted the agency and indicated readiness to comply with Russian law.
“If this isn’t just a statement, but a genuine willingness on the platform to change its approach to ensuring children’s safety online, then Roskomnadzor will interact with the platform as it does with any other service that complies with Russian law,” the watchdog said, according to Interfax.
Roblox Russia Ban: Compliance Talks and Regulatory Pressure
A Roblox spokesperson confirmed the outreach in an emailed comment to Reuters, saying the company was ready “to temporarily limit communication features in Russia and to revise our content moderation processes to address the legal requirements necessary to restore our community’s access to the platform.”
The spokesperson added that Roblox “intends to continue dialogue with Roskomnadzor as access to the platform is restored, including discussions around additional compliance measures that may be considered over time.” No timeline was given for lifting the ban.
The restriction has triggered visible frustration among users, with a protest reported over the weekend in the Siberian city of Tomsk and Russian media reporting that President Vladimir Putin received numerous letters from children following the decision.
A Moscow-based user attempting to access Roblox on Wednesday, 17 Dec. 2025, reported seeing a blank screen displaying a “checking updates” message.
Roskomnadzor has said the ban also reflected concerns that Roblox hosted propaganda, justified “extremist and terrorist activity,” and included information related to LGBTQ+ issues.
The agency recently pressed Valve, Apple, and Google to remove Flick Solitaire for allegedly featuring LGBTQ+ content, with Valve’s Steam platform reportedly the only one to comply.
Any restoration of Roblox access would represent a rare accommodation between Russian regulators and a U.S. technology company amid broader wartime restrictions on foreign platforms.
