Highlights

  • ASUS and Microsoft launch ROG Xbox Ally handhelds at $599.99–$999.99 in the US.
  • Both devices are powered by AMD Ryzen Z2 chips, integrated Windows 11, Xbox Game Pass, and Steam, competing with Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch.
  • India launch on Oct. 16 will test adoption in a price-sensitive but rapidly growing gaming market.

ASUS Republic of Gamers and Microsoft opened preorders for two new gaming handhelds, marking an ambitious push into the portable gaming market that has seen renewed interest following the success of Valve's Steam Deck.

The ROG Xbox Ally, priced at $599.99, and the premium ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99, represent a collaboration between the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer and Microsoft's Xbox division. Preorders began in North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia, with India scheduled to follow on Oct. 16.

The devices run Windows 11 and offer access to Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and other PC gaming libraries, positioning them as alternatives to traditional consoles and gaming laptops. Both handhelds are powered by AMD's latest Ryzen Z2 processors, with the premium model featuring AI capabilities through an integrated neural processing unit.

Specifications Target Performance Gap

The base ROG Xbox Ally features AMD's Ryzen Z2 A processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The higher-end Ally X includes AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip with 24GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and a larger 80-watt-hour battery compared to the standard model's 60Wh capacity.

Both devices include 7-inch displays with 120Hz refresh rates and support multiple gaming modes, including native play, cloud gaming through Xbox Game Pass, and remote play from Xbox consoles

The collaboration reflects Microsoft's broader strategy to expand Xbox beyond traditional consoles. The company has increasingly emphasized game subscription services and cloud gaming as it competes with Sony's PlayStation and faces new entrants in portable gaming.

India Launch Tests Price-Sensitive Market

The Oct. 16 launch in India will test demand for the ROG Xbox Ally in a price-conscious market where gaming adoption has grown rapidly. While specific Indian pricing hasn't been announced, the devices' $600 to $1,000 price range in the U.S. could present challenges in a market where affordability often drives purchasing decisions.

Industry analysts note that portable gaming devices occupy an expanding niche between smartphones and traditional consoles. The success of Nintendo's Switch and, more recently, Valve's Steam Deck has demonstrated consumer appetite for high-performance portable gaming.

The ROG Xbox Ally handhelds will be available through Microsoft's online store, ASUS's direct sales channel, and select retailers. Future software updates planned for early 2026 will add AI-powered features, including automatic super resolution and gameplay highlight capture.

The ROG Xbox Ally handhelds face competition from established players, including Nintendo's Switch family and Valve's Steam Deck, as well as emerging competitors in the PC handheld space. Success will likely depend on pricing strategy, game library access, and battery life performance, which are key factors that have determined winners in the portable gaming market.
