Sony Reportedly Clears Up PS4 and PS5 License Confusion
PS4 and PS5 digital games require a one-time online check, easing offline access concerns.
Highlights
- Sony confirms no recurring online checks are needed for digitally purchased PS4 and PS5 games.
- Community testing traced the 30-day timer to a refund exploit fix, not a new access restriction.
- After one online check, purchased titles stay accessible even during server outages or extended offline use.
Sony has confirmed the 30-day timer on some digital PlayStation games is a one-time license check, not recurring, according to a statement made to Game File. The clarification follows widespread concern after the PS5 version 13.20 update appeared to introduce periodic DRM validation for PS4 and PS5 titles.
Early testing by players and YouTube creators suggested games bought after mid-April 2026 had a 30-day timer requiring an online check. Even setting a console as primary did not override the restriction, raising concerns about offline access and ownership.
Sony has now stated that ongoing verification is not required.
“Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual,” a PlayStation spokesperson told Game File. He added that the system only requires an initial online check after purchase, with no further verification needed afterward.
How Does the PS4 and PS5 30-Day License Timer Work, and Why Did Sony Introduce it?
Community testing and backend analysis suggest the system is tied to PlayStation’s 14-day refund policy. Digital purchases appear to receive an initial 30-day license instead of an indefinite one.
Evidence from ResetEra testing shows that this license transitions to a permanent version after the refund window closes, often around two weeks post-purchase.
One widely discussed theory from community testing, including analysis by ResetEra user Andshrew, suggests the change targets a refund exploit. Andshrew noted that players could previously buy a game, extract a permanent license, and then refund it, while newer purchases now receive a temporary 30-day license before switching to a permanent one. By delaying the issuance of an indefinite license, the system may block that workflow until the refund window closes.
Sony’s statement to Game File also addresses preservation concerns. After the one-time check, games remain playable offline without further validation, reducing risks from outages or extended offline use.
