KPop Demon Hunters 2 Release Date May Slip Past 2029

The sequel to Sony Pictures Animation's blockbuster KPop Demon Hunters may take longer to reach screens than initially reported.

Sony Pictures Animation co-president, Kristine Belson, suggested that the 2029 launch date reported by Variety and Bloomberg appears optimistic, given the scope of work required for a follow-up. When asked if the timeline seemed unrealistic, Belson tapped her nose to signal agreement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Belson indicated that substantive work on the sequel has yet to begin, as the creative team navigates the first film's unexpected success. "There's been a lot to tend to in terms of the award campaign," she said, adding that directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans would soon begin discussing the franchise's direction. "After all the noise and awards and big parties with big people — yes. It'll be back to the two of them in a room."

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Release Date Uncertain as Production Timeline Extends

KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix's most-watched release in the platform's history. The animated film surpassed Squid Game, Wednesday, and Stranger Things in viewership after its late 2025 debut.

Co-president Damien de Froberville said the studio could follow its Spider-Verse franchise playbook when expanding the sequel's scope. "On Spider-Verse, I was like, 'How are they going to top Across the Spider-Verse?' And then we're looking at art and design [for 2027's Beyond the Spider-Verse], and it's really blowing my mind," he said.

"KPop will be the same thing. It's just like Spider-Verse. The world is so rich — the world of the demons and the pop star [element], what happened to Jinu. There's so much we could expand into."

The animated musical follows Korean pop band Huntrix, a trio who double as demon hunters battling an evil demon king. While past reports suggested a live-action adaptation might be in development, creator Maggie Kang has said to BBC that the series works best in animation, calling it "really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world."

Sony has not provided an official release date for the sequel, as of reporting.
