Next-Gen Consoles, PS6 and Next Xbox May Hit $1000 Price

Analysts Warn PS6 and Next-Gen Xbox Could Cost Up to $1,000

AI-driven memory shortages, U.S. tariffs, and Sony's latest PS5 price hike signal that next-generation console hardware is tracking toward luxury pricing territory.

Highlights

  • Analysts warn PS6 and next Xbox price could hit $999, following PS5 price hike and rising hardware costs.
  • AI data center expansion and U.S. tariffs have pushed DRAM and NAND prices up 80-90%, impacting console production.
  • Premium console pricing may slow adoption rates, pushing gamers toward mobile gaming and subscription-based platforms.

The next generation of gaming console (PS6 and next Xbox) prices could approach $1,000, according to industry analysts. The warning follows Sony Interactive Entertainment's March 27 announcement of hardware price increases, including PlayStation 5 (PS5).  From April 2, 2026, all Sony hardware ranges will cost $100 more than the previous pricings.

Kantan Games CEO Dr. Serkan Toto has said to GamesRader+ that he thinks that $999 for “one variant of the PS6 is not impossible.” After Sony’s recent price hike, a PS5 Pro already costs $899.99. Considering this price range, a $1,000 price tag for next-gen consoles seems possible.

Meanwhile, Ampere Analysis research director of games, Piers Harding-Rolls, told CNBC that Sony’s price increases were inevitable. “With no sign of prices easing ... Sony will have made the move to protect its slim hardware margins,” he stated. According to him, it would not be a surprise if Microsoft and Nintendo also follow Sony’s decision.

What This Means for PS6 and Next-Gen Xbox Launches

SuperData co-founder and a NYU video games professor, Joost van Dreunen, echoed similar concerns. He stated that the next generation of consoles, PS6 and Xbox “Project Helix,” will launch “at a 50% higher price point than the current one did.”

Dreunen referred to U.S. tariffs and the AI data center boom as the primary drivers of this surge. “The relentless effort by the US administration to disrupt the global economy is backfiring exactly as expected,” he stated.

The combined pressure of data center demand and U.S. tariffs is resulting in surging costs of all console and PC components, including RAM, GPUs, and SSDs. According to Dreunen, DRAM and NAND prices have increased 80-90% as of early 2026.

While the launch of both PS6 and Xbox “Project Helix” is far off, with speculations of a 2028-2029 launch, the current market dynamics put the pricing in flux, according to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella.

He argues that while it’s possible for console prices to cross the $1K mark in the future, the volatility in the hardware market doesn’t leave any room for certainty. Nonetheless, the continuous increase in prices could result in slow console adoption and push more gamers toward mobile or subscription-based streaming alternatives.
