- The reveal sparked debate over Kratos' role, physical discs, and PlayStation's future roadmap.
Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will launch for PlayStation 5 (PS5) on Feb 16, 2027. The studio also revealed that the next Kratos-led God of War game will follow directly after Laufey. Both announcements were made during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, as reported by IGN.
God of War Laufey Sets Up the Next Kratos Story
God of War Laufey follows Faye after her death. She awakens in the Everywhen, where gods from different mythologies compete for power. Her mission is to protect the future she planned for Kratos and Atreus while battling through the realm's dangers.
During the panel, Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative, Cory Barlog, stated that God of War Laufey was created to expand the franchise's world by exploring unexpected characters while continuing the series' overarching narrative
"Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next," he noted. He also added that the game is designed to build the world further, with its story laying the foundation for future developments.
Barlog confirmed the next Kratos game will connect directly to Laufey. However, he did not reveal its setting, title, release window, or target platforms.
Gameplay shown during June's PlayStation State of Play began with Kratos and Atreus performing Faye's funeral, as seen in 2018's God of War. Kratos also appears briefly later in the footage. His overall role in Laufey remains unclear.
God of War Announcement Extends Discussion Beyond Laufey's Release
The game's reveal drew mixed reactions.
Some fans praised its combat and visuals, while others questioned the decision to shift the focus away from Kratos. The physical disc featured in Santa Monica Studio's announcement also sparked discussion. Some users called it probably the last disc, or maybe the second last before Marvel's Wolverine, referencing reports that Sony could phase out physical PlayStation game discs by 2028.
Following the reveal of God of War Laufey in June 2026, Santa Monica Studio said it had "many more stories to tell" with Kratos. The Comic-Con announcement reinforces that message. The studio is also developing a God of War Greek Trilogy Remake, which remains in early development.
Collectively, the projects outline PlayStation's long-term plans for one of its biggest franchises.
