Electronic Arts (EA) is closing BioWare and ending early development on its next Mass Effect game as part of a restructuring that will eliminate approximately 400 jobs across the company. Announced on Oct. 21, 2026, the decision affects around 50 BioWare employees, according to Bloomberg, and ends the Edmonton studio’s 31-year history.
What Went Wrong With BioWare?
Founded in 1995, BioWare established its reputation with Baldur’s Gate in 1998, followed by Neverwinter Nights and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Its later franchises, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, became known for branching narratives, consequential decisions, and character relationships.
Mass Effect also helped broaden representation through same-sex relationships.
The studio’s move toward multiplayer games with Anthem in 2019 disappointed critics and players. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released in 2024, also failed to meet EA’s sales expectations. Some longtime fans criticized its approach to moral choices compared with earlier entries.
EA stated that it would prioritize fewer large-scale action-adventure projects while continuing development on Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game. Respawn and DICE will collaborate on a future shooter, alongside continued investment in Battlefield and Apex Legends.
Other portfolio changes include Project Gridiron, a social-first American football experience, and Fight Night, which is in pre-production. EA is prioritizing the Sims project Project Evergreen, pausing Project Lotus, and reducing the team developing skate.
The company said affected employees could explore internal positions.
BioWare Shutdown Prompts Employee Buyout Proposal
The closure follows EA’s $55 billion USD acquisition by a Saudi Arabia-led investor group in August 2026, a deal that reportedly left the company with $20 billion in debt.
BioWare thanked players for being “the most meaningful part of our story.” Mass Effect voice actors Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer said the community would keep the franchise alive. CD Projekt Red co-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, also acknowledged BioWare’s influence on the Polish developer.
On Oct. 22, Canadian New Democratic Party leader, Avi Lewis, called for federal support to help employees buy and operate the studio, criticizing private equity ownership.
However, EA said it did not take the decision lightly, calling BioWare a “legendary studio” that helped define role-playing games. Its closure leaves the developer’s existing catalogue as its legacy while ending work on its next Mass Effect installment.
