Discord to Make Public Messages Searchable on Google

Discord to Make Public Messages Searchable on Google

Discord’s December update will make public server discussions searchable online, with opt-out options for users.

Highlights

  • Discord is expanding web discovery to make public community discussions easier to find online.
  • The update introduces new server pages and search features, with a rollout beginning in November 2026.
  • The changes raise privacy concerns over how public conversations are shared beyond the platform.

Discord will begin making messages from its Discoverable Servers searchable on Google and other search engines from mid-December 2026, potentially exposing public conversations to a wider audience. The Oct 27, 2026, announcement introduces new privacy controls, but message sharing will be enabled by default for most eligible users.

The update covers more than 63K discoverable servers. These communities must have at least 1K members, be at least eight weeks old, and meet Discord’s activity and safety requirements.

Discord Expands Server Web Pages With Searchable Discussions

Starting Nov 16, every discoverable server will receive a server web page, including communities that have not created one manually. Existing pages can be edited, while default pages will use information from each server’s profile.

The pages will feature two types of content:

  • Channel Summaries: Automated summaries of active public discussions, available from Nov 16. Administrators can curate them, select contributing channels, or disable them.
  • Channel Messages: Individual messages from eligible public channels may appear on web pages and search results from mid-December. Usernames and avatars will not accompany them.

Discord Group Product Manager, Kelsey Duncombe-Smith, indicated that the initiative aims to make information previously “locked in Discord conversations” accessible across the internet.

The company has tested Channel Messages with the Rust, NBA 2K, and Dead by Daylight communities. During the pilot, only administrators and moderators contributed posts, not regular members.

What are the Privacy Settings and Regional Exceptions?

Administrators can manage web visibility through Server Settings > Web Presence, while members can disable “Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages” under User Settings > Data and Privacy. One member setting applies across all Discoverable Servers.

Major restrictions include:

  • The member setting is off by default in the EU, Brazil, UK, Canada, Australia, and South Korea.
  • Disabling the setting prevents future messages from appearing, but previously published messages remain unless deleted. Search engines may retain cached copies.
  • Teen users cannot enable Channel Messages until adulthood.
  • Messages sent before the mid-December rollout are excluded.
  • Private servers, direct messages, and group direct messages remain unaffected.

Discord says the change will help people find gaming strategies, developer updates, guides, and community answers without joining a server first. The platform also allows Discoverable Servers to revert to Community Server status if administrators do not want a web page.

The update could make Discord more searchable, but it also risks reigniting privacy concerns over users’ public conversations.
