Highlights

  • Double Fine Productions laid off 23 employees shortly after regaining its independence from Microsoft's Xbox division.
  • Founder Tim Schafer cited financial sustainability for the cuts, emphasizing that the studio successfully retained full IP control & its back catalog.
  • The spin-out follows a massive Xbox restructuring initiative that aims to eliminate 3,200 positions across Microsoft's gaming division.

Just weeks after regaining its independence from Microsoft, San Francisco-based developer Double Fine Productions has laid off 23 employees. This difficult reduction impacts roughly 25% of the studio's tightly knit workforce of around 90 people, marking a painful but necessary first step in its new chapter as a standalone company. The cuts directly follow a restructuring deal earlier this week that spun the beloved studio out of the Xbox division.

Studio founder and CEO Tim Schafer took to social media to explain the heartbreaking decision, noting that the layoffs were made to ensure the studio becomes a size it can financially sustain. He emphasized the emotional toll of the cuts, stating that as a small team, these actions are never taken lightly. According to Schafer, only the survival of the studio would ever make leadership consider such a painful move.

He warmly praised the departing staff, affirming that everyone leaving was important and made a lasting impact on Double Fine’s games and culture. Schafer added that the company is committed to supporting each affected person as best as they can, thanking them for their hard work and dedication to the studio's creative spirit.

End of $13.2M Microsoft Deal & Retaining IP Control

These job losses follow the end of a high-profile partnership that began when Microsoft acquired Double Fine for $13.2 million USD in 2019. During its successful run under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella, the developer released well-received titles like Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln. Despite the separation, Double Fine walks away in a secure creative position. An Xbox spokesperson confirmed in a statement to Kotaku that the studio has fully returned to independent management, retaining complete control over its intellectual properties, back catalog, and the financial runway needed for its next games. The spokesperson added that Microsoft looks forward to seeing what Double Fine creates next.

The structural changes at Double Fine arrive amid a devastating wave of restructuring sweeping through Microsoft's gaming division. Under the leadership of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the company is shifting its budget and focus toward major established franchises, leaving less room for experimental studios. This massive reset is expected to ultimately eliminate 3,200 positions across Xbox Game Studios through fiscal year 2027, with a staggering 1,600 of those roles already cut on July 6, as per Gamesindustry.biz.

Double Fine was one of five studios deeply impacted by these sweeping corporate changes earlier this month. While Double Fine and South of Midnight developer Compulsion Games have successfully managed to spin out into independent studios, others face a more complicated transition. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are currently negotiating new ownership and funding deals to stay afloat. Meanwhile, Arkane Lyon is undergoing formal consultation proceedings in France to review potential strategic options for its future.
