Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke has revealed that the studio’s 2017 classic, Divinity: Original Sin 2, recently achieved its best month of sales since its original launch nine years ago. The sudden resurgence in popularity for the celebrated RPG has been attributed to the massive hype surrounding the studio’s next major project, simply titled Divinity, which was officially announced at The Game Awards in December 2025. Vincke noted that the reveal sparked a massive wave of interest that lifted the entire franchise, jokingly adding on social media that he wished he had "removed the squirrel in time," referencing a specific quirk new players are discovering.
The data surrounding this comeback is genuinely surprising for a single-player title of this age. While Divinity: Original Sin 2 did not catch on like wildfire immediately upon its September 2017 release, it still managed a respectable peak of nearly 94k concurrent players at the time. However, recent figures from Steam tracking services show that in January 2026, the game reached an average of over 27k concurrent players.
This puts the game within striking distance of its previous post-launch record of approximately 30k concurrent players set in March 2020. Community estimates now suggest the lifetime sales of the title sit around 7.5 million copies, a number heavily bolstered by this recent surge.
Baldur’s Gate 3 'Halo Effect'
This "halo effect" isn't just limited to the Divinity series; the studio's 2023 hit Baldur’s Gate 3 is also seeing incredible numbers. Despite being nearly three years old, it continues to rival modern live-service games in terms of engagement. Baldur’s Gate 3 was a massive success at launch, pulling in over 875k concurrent players on Steam alone. Today, it remains one of the most played games on PC, with recent daily averages exceeding 100k concurrent players. Vincke confirmed that sales for both titles have been "incredible" since the new announcement.
Several key factors have aligned to create this perfect storm for Larian's back catalog. Beyond the trailer excitement, a recent console re-release of the Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 provided a free upgrade that drew in a wave of console players in mid-December. This was compounded by heavy discounts during Steam's winter sale, including a massive 75% price cut on the Enhanced Edition.
Fan engagement was further sustained by a recent AMA session that teased features for the upcoming Divinity game, such as improved companions, a revised character creator, and a shift away from Original Sin 2's divisive armour system.
While the new Divinity game is still a long way off, Larian's ability to maintain player interest is unique in the industry. Historically, Divinity: Original Sin 2 held steady with 10k to 20k monthly player peaks even before this boom. For now, players seem more than happy to stick with the modern classics.
