Nintendo Switch 2 dominates, while Sony and Xbox face historic hardware declines.

May 2026: Nintendo Switch 2 Dominates While Sony and Xbox Decline

Nintendo Switch 2 sales drive May 2026 growth as record-high console prices cause major unit sales drops for PlayStation and Xbox ahead of the GTA VI November release.

Highlights

  • The Switch 2 fueled industry growth, becoming the second fastest-selling console in U.S. history.
  • Despite a 38% spending surge driven by high prices, PlayStation and Xbox unit sales plummeted to historic lows.
  • Content spending rose 1% led by 007 First Light, ahead of the Grand Theft Auto VI launch on November 19, 2026.

The U.S. video game industry managed a surprising growth spurt in May 2026, pulling in a total of $4.18 billion USD across hardware, games, and accessories. According to the latest monthly report from Circana senior director and veteran industry analyst Mat Piscatella, that total represents a solid 3% increase compared to May 2025. However, this growth mask a brutal reality split down the middle of the console wars. The entire month was carried on the back of the unstoppable Nintendo Switch 2, which single-handedly offset historic, devastating hardware sales drops from both Sony and Microsoft.

While Nintendo’s newest console continued to smash records, PlayStation and Xbox experienced their worst May hardware unit sales in decades. Total U.S. hardware spending actually surged by 38% year-over-year to hit $249M, but that spike was entirely driven by skyrocketing console prices rather than people buying it more.

Driven by a global component shortage and intense demand from AI data centers, the average price paid for a new console in the U.S. reached a hefty $502 this May, a 14% increase from last year. PlayStation 5 average pricing skyrocketed by 33% to $672 following a price hike this past April, causing PS5 hardware spending to plummet by 43% and actual unit sales to take a massive 58% nosedive. This marked PlayStation's worst May for hardware units sold since the year 2000.

Xbox didn't fare any better, continuing a trend of dwindling sales that has increasingly felt like business as usual. While Xbox Series hardware spending technically grew by 7% thanks to recent price hikes and an upcoming one scheduled for August 1, 2026, the actual number of units sold fell by 12% year-over-year, as per wccftech.

This resulted in the lowest number of Xbox hardware units ever recorded for a May month in the brand's entire history. Despite the grim numbers, the overall leaderboard didn't change: Nintendo and PlayStation held their usual first and second place spots for unit sales, while Xbox lagged behind in third.

Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Records

The story was completely different for Nintendo, which stood as the undisputed champion of the month in both units sold and total dollars. The Switch 2 officially wrapped up its first twelve months on the market with a staggering 5.9M units sold in the U.S. alone. This incredible performance makes the Switch 2 the second fastest-selling video game console in U.S. tracked history, sitting only behind the legendary Game Boy Advance, which moved 6.5M units. Even more impressively, the momentum of the Switch 2 helped drive a year-on-year rise in physical game sales in the U.S. for the first time since 2009.

Over on the software side, great games kept the rest of the market steady. Total content spending reached $3.8B, representing a stable 1% increase over last year that was heavily driven by console software sales rather than PC. IO Interactive's highly anticipated spy thriller 007 First Light debuted as the month's highest-grossing game by dollar sales.

It was followed in the May charts by Microsoft's Forza Horizon 6 in second place, Warner Bros. Discovery's LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight in third, and Subnautica 2 in fourth. It is worth noting that the tracking for both Forza Horizon 6 and Subnautica 2 includes digital sales projections rather than actual digital point-of-sale data, though that doesn't take away from the stellar performance of the lineup.

The Best-Selling Games of 2026 So Far

This explosive debut month instantly catapulted 007 First Light into fourth place for the top-selling games in the U.S. for the year of 2026 so far. Forza Horizon 6 sits right behind it in fifth place for the year, while LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight also secured a comfortable spot on the year-to-date top-10 list in seventh place.

The arrival of these three newcomers completely reshaped the yearly standings, bumping Minecraft, ARC Raiders, and NBA 2K26 out of the top ten entirely. Meanwhile, the top three spots for 2026 remain firmly locked in with Resident Evil Requiem at number one, Crimson Desert at number two, and MLB The Show 26 at number three.

Ultimately, May 2026 proved that while players are becoming incredibly picky about which expensive consoles they are willing to buy, they are still more than willing to open their wallets for great software. The Switch 2 remains the clear trailblazer of the current hardware landscape, though its ultimate endurance test will come in November, when it will inevitably have to play second fiddle to the biggest, most anticipated video game release in history, Grand Theft Auto VI, which will be released on November 19, 2026.
