Microsoft has outlined early details for its next-generation Xbox hardware, codenamed “Project Helix,” promising a console that combines Xbox and Windows gaming ecosystems. The hardware uses a custom-made AMD SoC to increase the raytracing performance ability “beyond what’s currently possible with the Xbox Series X and S.”
Xbox’s Next Generation VP Jason Ronald indicated that Helix will help cross barriers across different gaming systems in a session during the Game Developers Conference. Helix would provide “a simpler, more unified path to reach more players,” he said.
The announcement follows Microsoft Gaming CEO, Asha Sharma’s statement that “Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games.” Recently, during a Q&A session, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also suggested that the company aims to make gaming more accessible for players.
Ronald further noted that Project Helix is “co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR to unlock what comes next.” He reflected on its advanced GPU performance that “drives meaningful gains in efficiency, scale, and visual ambition,” to create a more immersive and realistic in-game worldbuilding.
According to Ronald’s statements, the company plans to distribute the alpha versions of Project Helix in early 2027.
Microsoft’s Upcoming Plans for Xbox Ecosystems
Apart from reaffirming Helix’s development, Ronald also stated the company’s plans for the 25th anniversary of Xbox. The company aims to sustain the older generations of Xbox games for the coming years, and they will release “new ways to play” some of the popular older Xbox titles.
Microsoft is also bringing an “Xbox Mode” to Windows 11. Ronald stated that the Xbox mode allows players to effortlessly transition between work and gaming, while leveraging the flexibility of Windows and full screen Xbox experience.
He positioned the Xbox mode as a way to give players the flexibility to use the hardware they have. The Xbox mode will start rolling out in April 2026, in selected regions.
