Highlights

  • Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick defended the GTA 6 digital-only launch, where physical retail boxes will contain only a download code.
  • The decision is backed by strong financial data showing digital channels accounted for 99% of Take-Two's net bookings, with overall digital sales reaching 98%.
  • Gamers are heavily pushing back against the lack of physical software ownership and the loss of resale options despite paying premium prices.

The era of popping a brand-new Rockstar game disc into your console is officially coming to a close. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick is firmly defending the controversial decision to launch Grand Theft Auto 6 without a playable physical disc, arguing that traditional discs simply “don’t really make sense for the consumer” in today’s always-online gaming landscape. When the highly anticipated sequel arrives on November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, players who buy the physical retail version will find a digital download code inside the box instead of a disc.

This pivot away from physical media has sparked a massive uproar among fans who value physical ownership, but the publisher’s leadership insists the move is a natural evolution of the industry. Speaking during an investor Q&A, as spotted by IGN, Zelnick addressed the shift head-on. “Our business is well over 90% digitally distributed,” Zelnick explained. “It’s already a digital business. So in certain instances, especially if it’s a big game, discs just — and note I said discs — don’t really make sense for the consumer.”

He pointed out that because players usually have to register their games online anyway, downloading a massive title directly from a storefront is fundamentally the same experience, just much more convenient. The financial reality behind this decision paints a very clear picture of where the money is going. During Take-Two’s fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings call, Zelnick revealed that digital online sales made up a staggering 98% of the company’s revenue for the three months ending June 30, 2026.

Furthermore, 99% of Take-Two’s $1.39 billion in net bookings for that quarter came from digital channels, with recurrent consumer spending, like in-game purchases and virtual currency, accounting for 84% of those bookings. Looking ahead, Take-Two has reiterated that it predicts an enormous $8 billion to $8.2 billion in net bookings for fiscal year 2027, driven largely by the launch of GTA 6.

Lucia, one of the protagonists from Grand Theft Auto VI, stands in the middle of a crowded nightclub illuminated by blue, pink, and purple neon lights. She wears a glittering silver dress and a gold necklace while holding a smartphone at her side. Lucia looks directly toward the camera with a serious expression as dancers move around her in the background, creating a vibrant party atmosphere.

Gamers Push Back Over Ownership and Pricing

Despite the corporate financial logic, the gaming community’s reaction has been overwhelmingly negative. Gamers are loudly protesting the loss of actual software ownership, noting that a download code permanently ties the game to a single digital storefront account. This eliminates their ability to collect, trade in, or resell the title once they are done playing, as per VGC.

Fans are particularly frustrated that they are still expected to pay premium prices, $79.99 for the standard edition or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, while the publisher saves entirely on the manufacturing and shipping costs associated with physical media.

However, Take-Two’s console strategy aligns closely with broader industry shifts that are moving away from physical media entirely. Following the GTA 6 announcement, Sony revealed that PlayStation 5 game discs will no longer be produced for titles launching after January 2028. Addressing the shift in a recent Q&A, Sony confirmed they are going to "cautiously move this forward," and new PS5 console boxes are already appearing on store shelves with warning labels explaining the new disc situation to consumers.

While Zelnick hasn't completely ruled out physical releases forever, comparing their potential niche survival to vinyl records in the modern music industry, the current plan is to proceed with a digital-first model. Fans eager to see more of that digital future won't have to wait long, as an "extended look" at GTA 6 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix later this month.
