  • Microsoft refutes GTA 6 pre-order rumors, citing "record orders" and dismissing misleading affiliate click data.
  • Experts note that affiliate traffic does not accurately reflect actual global console sales.
  • Verified platform performance for Grand Theft Auto 6 remains unavailable until after the November 19, 2026 launch.

Microsoft is firmly pushing back against viral internet rumors claiming that PlayStation 5 pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 are absolutely crushing Xbox numbers. Following reports that PS5 versions were outselling Xbox by a massive 8-to-1 margin, an Xbox representative stepped in to clear the air. Instead of lagging behind, the company asserts that it is actually seeing "record orders" for the highly anticipated Rockstar Games blockbuster.

The controversy kicked off shortly after GTA 6 pre-orders officially opened on June 25. Just one day later, gaming outlet IGN shared a post on X claiming that internal data from its "IGN Finds" commerce affiliate program showed PlayStation outperforming Xbox by a staggering rate of 8-to-1. In simple terms, their data showed that readers were clicking on PS5 pre-order links eight times more often than Xbox Series X links. This sparked intense debate across social media, leading many to assume Xbox players were skipping the pre-order window entirely.

However, Xbox was quick to pour cold water on these metrics. Addressing the situation through Windows Central, an Xbox executive issued a clear and direct statement denying the rumors: “This doesn’t represent pre-order data. We’ve had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links."

Why Affiliate Data Fails as a Global Market Blueprint

Gaming analysts and media outlets quickly backed up Microsoft's stance, pointing out the major flaws in using affiliate data as a market blueprint. These links typically only reflect the specific demographics, platform preferences, and reading habits of a single publication's audience, making them a very weak stand-in for total global performance. While Sony's PlayStation 5 may currently hold an estimated 2-to-1 global hardware market advantage over Xbox, there is currently no public-facing way to validate the 8-to-1 pre-order claim.

Xbox's bold statement about "record orders" suggests that all parties are already very happy with the game's commercial performance, while also allowing Microsoft to confidently defend its position amid reignited console war debates, as per Polygon.

The massive scale of interest in Grand Theft Auto 6 means that any sign of platform preference draws immediate attention. Rockstar Games has officially scheduled the game to launch on November 19, 2026, for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. Anticipation remains sky-high despite the game's premium pricing structure, which sits at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.

This whole debacle serves as a strong reminder for fans to be wary of unofficial sales data and online rumors, especially for a game as heavily scrutinized as GTA 6. Until PlayStation, Xbox, or publisher Take-Two Interactive officially shares real sales numbers following the November 19 launch, we simply won't know for sure how the game is performing on a per-platform basis.
