Capcom has a singular, ambitious goal for Monster Hunter Wilds to make it the company's best-selling game of all time. While the game enjoyed a record-breaking launch by selling over 8 million copies in its first three days, early technical hurdles and PC optimization issues briefly stalled its momentum. Now, with those performance patches successfully deployed, the game sits at an impressive 11.40M units sold worldwide. To finally dethrone Monster Hunter: World, Capcom is aggressively rolling out a massive new expansion, a permanent price cut, and a highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 version to invite a whole new wave of players into the hunt.
The gap Capcom needs to close is substantial, but not impossible. Monster Hunter: World currently holds the crown as Capcom's best-selling single title with 22.10M units sold—a figure that swells past 30M when bundled with its massive Iceborne expansion. During the recent Q1 2027 earnings call, Capcom emphasized its dedication to the long game.
The publisher noted that ongoing technical enhancements have already led to improved sales, alongside a very positive community response to the upcoming Ascendance expansion and new pricing measures. Capcom clearly stated plan is to continue refining the experience and aiming to drive total unit sales beyond those of World over the medium to long term.
To get those numbers up and lower the barrier to entry, Capcom permanently slashed the base game's price from $69.99 to $39.99 in the United States and £34.99 in the United Kingdom. On top of the discount, a free "Prologue" demo launched on August 5, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This offline trial lets curious gamers experience the opening story hours, build their Hunter and Palico, test out all 14 weapon types, and play up to Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest.” Best of all, players can seamlessly transfer their save data to the full version if they decide to jump into the Forbidden Lands.

The Main Event: Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance
But the true centerpiece of Capcom's strategy rests on Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a paid expansion slated to launch in 2027. Hoping to mirror the colossal success of Iceborne, Ascendance will cater directly to veteran hunters by reintroducing the grueling Master Rank difficulty tier for higher-level progression and gear crafting. Players will take their Seikret mounts to the Skybound Eyrie, a stunning new region of floating islands and ancient ruins navigated by riding updrafts, as per Wccftech.
Combat is also getting a massive shakeup with the Boost Bracer, a tool that unlocks devastating new attacks, combos, and mobility options for every weapon. On the monster front, fans can expect new aerial threats alongside the return of iconic Elder Dragons like Kushala Daora and the colossal Lao-Shan Lung, who hasn't been seen since Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate.
Finally, Capcom is eyeing a completely new hardware frontier to boost its numbers: the Nintendo Switch 2. Officially in development, this upcoming port could tap into the massive portable audience that drove Monster Hunter Rise to over 18 million sales.
Datamining leaks indicate that developers are pushing Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console to its absolute limits. Utilizing DLSS upscaling, the game is reportedly targeting dynamic resolutions between 1080p and 1440p while docked, and scaling between 720p and 864p in handheld mode. With performance data pointing to a smooth 30 to 40 frames-per-second experience, Switch 2 owners are in for a visually impressive and fluid hunt on the go, providing the perfect secondary sales window to help Wilds achieve Capcom's ultimate goal.
