Highlights

  • Netflix sells Spry Fox back to its founders as part of its ongoing gaming division restructuring.
  • Netflix revenue reached $39B in 2024, while Netflix Games recorded more than 81M downloads in 2023.
  • Spirit Crossing remains in development, with Netflix publishing the mobile version as Spry Fox regains independent control.

Netflix has sold Spry Fox, the studio behind Cozy Grove and the in-development Spirit Crossing, back to founders Daniel Cook and David Edery. The sale, first reported by Game File, comes as Netflix continues restructuring its gaming division following internal changes over the past year.

Spry Fox, founded in 2010 and acquired by Netflix in 2022, is the latest team affected by the company’s shifting priorities. Netflix revenue surpassed $39B in 2024, while Netflix Games downloads exceeded 81M in 2023.

The transition mirrors the forces that led to the shutdown of Netflix’s Team Blue last year, though Spry Fox will return to independent operation rather than closing.

Netflix Sells Spry Fox as Gaming Strategy Continues Shifting

Spirit Crossing remains in development and is currently in alpha testing. Netflix will still publish the mobile version next year, while the studio is now free to bring the game to additional platforms.

Edery said the change aligns with Spirit Crossing’s broader goals, noting the game was “built to connect the world, bring people together and inspire kindness.”

Ahead of the sale, Spry Fox acknowledged that Netflix had provided stability during a difficult period for the industry. In a studio blog post tied to Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, the team described its time under the streamer as “a huge relief” while the sector faced widespread layoffs and closures.

Netflix, meanwhile, is refocusing its games business around party titles, narrative games, kids' releases, and more TV-based play. Recent additions include Netflix Puzzled, PAW Patrol Academy, WWE2K25, and Red Dead Redemption, with upcoming releases such as Best Guess and Dead Man’s Party: A Knives Out Game.

Spry Fox’s return to independence reflects another step in Netflix’s evolving strategy, while Spirit Crossing continues toward launch with a wider release pathway.
