Out of absolutely nowhere, a brand new, free-to-play Borderlands game just went live on the Apple App Store. There were no flashy trailers, no weeks of Twitter teasers, and absolutely zero marketing leading up to it. Mobile gaming giant Zynga simply pushed the launch button, shadow-dropping an unannounced mobile adaptation that brings the beloved looter-shooter's signature cel-shaded chaos right to your smartphone.
Right now, the untitled project is locked as a "limited-time test" exclusively for iPhone users in the United States, though iPad owners can still run it by using a full-screen toggle. If you try accessing it from anywhere else in the world, you're just going to hit an immediate blockade and an error message. Development is being handled by British studio NaturalMotion, the team you might know from Star Wars: Hunters—who are tackling the touch-optimized controls and programming. Series creator Gearbox Software is sitting in the passenger seat for this one, serving in an advisory role to provide creative guidance and ensure the franchise's unique lore, history, and design stay completely intact.
A Zynga spokesperson recently said to IGN, stating that the company is always exploring fresh ways to introduce the chaotic universe to new audiences. They noted that this soft launch is meant to let players enjoy a new experience while the team gathers essential feedback before any kind of wider, global rollout. It's a move that makes perfect sense, lining up directly with parent company Take-Two Interactive's strategy of using Zynga's expertise to adapt blockbuster console properties for the highly lucrative mobile market.
Bite-Sized Mayhem and Classic Chaos
As for the game itself, the 2.9-gigabyte test build drops you straight into the action with a heavy focus on bite-sized play sessions. The developers clearly know exactly what platform they're on, proudly advertising the tagline, "Your attention span is short. So are our missions." While older fans might remember past mobile experiments like 2012's top-down Borderlands Legends, this free-to-play test offers first-person shooting across multiple modes.
The official App Store blurb invites players to "Create Mayhem YOUR way!" by hunting down legendary loot drops, powering up abilities, and using everything from pistols to rocket launchers. Players can tweak their Vault Hunter builds—the Siren class is reportedly already playable—and team up for co-op fights against evil corporations, skags, bandits, and bosses. Gameplay is split across a variety of modes, including standard Campaign Missions, the Tower of Terror, and the classic wave-based Circle of Slaughter.
The strangest part about this entire surprise launch is the absolute radio silence from the official Borderlands social media accounts. Instead of hyping up this new pocket-sized adventure, they've been incredibly busy posting about Borderlands 4 updates. Following a turbulent first six months, that mainline entry just received its first major DLC, and Gearbox clearly has high hopes it'll be enough to draw fans back in.
For now, there’s no official word from Zynga or 2K on when this mobile test will end, and Android users are unfortunately left waiting in the dark with no release timeline in sight. But if you're in the US with an iOS device, you can jump into the wasteland and snag some legendary loot on the go right now.
