Highlights

  • SharpEmu can boot Ghost of Yotei to its starting screen, but the PS5 exclusive is not yet playable.
  • PS5 emulators are making early progress with titles including Demon's Souls, GTA V, and Quake II.
  • Interest in PS5 emulation comes as Sony reportedly rethinks PC ports and prepares to end production of new PlayStation games on discs.

PlayStation 5 (PS5) emulator SharpEmu can now boot Ghost of Yotei to its starting screen. The October 2025 Sucker Punch release is one of the newest PlayStation exclusives tested through the emulator. The progress comes as Sony reportedly scales back its PC port strategy and prepares to end production of new PlayStation games on discs.

A July 20, 2026, YouTube video from BrutalSam shows Ghost of Yotei reaching its splash screen before the emulator crashes. However, the game is not playable; the test offers an early glimpse of progress for PC players who had anticipated a potential Steam release.

PS5 Emulators Make Early Progress

SharpEmu remains in an early stage, though Demon's Souls can now reach the Outpost Passage tutorial menu. Previous tests have also involved Bloodborne and Astro Bot. None of these PS5 games are currently playable through the emulator.

KytyPS5 is another project making progress. It has reached the main menu of GTA V, while the Quake II remaster can reportedly render 3D gameplay. These emulators can load eboot.bin files for select titles, but wider compatibility could take years.

The PS5's x86-64 CPU architecture could help development.

Interest in emulation is also growing as Sony changes its strategy. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported in March that the company was altering its approach to PlayStation exclusives. Some analysts have linked the shift to underwhelming Steam sales for PS5 ports.

A rumored Ghost of Yotei PC port could be affected, potentially interrupting Sony's run of first-party PC releases. Marvel's Wolverine also faces uncertainty over a PC launch. The strategy could give players another reason to buy PlayStation hardware as the PS6 approaches.

Sony is also set to stop producing new PlayStation titles on discs in early 2028. Despite piracy concerns, PS5 emulation could eventually support game preservation without relying solely on digital marketplaces.
