A widespread PlayStation Network (PSN) outage on July 24, 2026, left many players unable to sign in, access the PlayStation Store, or play games requiring PSN authentication. The disruption came hours after the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta began. It also renewed concerns about digital ownership as Sony prepares to end new PS5 disc production in 2028.
Downdetector recorded a peak of over 6K user reports at 4:29 pm on July 24. Most complaints involved server connections (43%), followed by login issues (34%) and gameplay problems (14%). By 1:29 pm on July 25, reports had fallen to 37, suggesting services were gradually recovering.
Some PS5 users also received the WS-116486-6 error, which indicates a server connection problem.
PSN Outage Exposes Reliance on Online License Checks
The outage disrupted multiplayer games, the PlayStation Store, and account logins. It also prevented some players from launching digital games that require online license verification. In some cases, even single-player titles were affected.
Players using Console Sharing and Offline Play on their primary PS5 remained undisturbed. However, users on secondary consoles remained dependent on PSN authentication. Physical Blu-ray games were largely unaffected, although many modern releases still rely on day-one patches.
The Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls team acknowledged the issue, saying, "We're aware that some PlayStation players are experiencing login and network issues. Our team is actively investigating the problem and working to identify the cause."
Players were directed to the game's Discord server for updates. Meanwhile, some users reported regaining access after repeated login attempts.
The Physical Media Debate Returns as PS5 Discs Near Retirement
The outage quickly reignited debate over digital ownership. Critics argued that purchased games become dependent on Sony's online infrastructure when license checks fail. Some also pointed to a brief Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage on the same day, although Sony has not confirmed any connection.
The latest disruption follows a 24-hour PSN outage in February 2025 and the 2011 breach that kept the network offline for more than three weeks. With physical PlayStation releases expected to end in 2028, the reliability of PSN is becoming an increasingly important part of the gaming experience.
