Sony Pictures Entertainment and PlayStation Productions have officially announced the director for the feature-film adaptation of the Helldivers franchise after enlisting veteran action filmmaker Justin Lin to direct. The update, released on Dec. 1, 2025, by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), follows Sony’s announcement of the movie plan in Jan. 2025.
The film’s development signals Sony’s effort to expand its gaming IPs into cinema, part of a broader push for PlayStation-branded content. The Helldivers franchise, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, proved to be a commercial and critical success for Sony. Helldivers 2, the sequel to 2015-launched Helldivers, sold over 12M copies within just four months after its console and PC launch in 2024.
Helldivers 2 also contributed to Sony’s 1.5B revenue from Steam. With the live-action adaptation underway, the company appears to push the momentum from recent gaming successes into the theatrical arena.
What the Creative Team Brings
PlayStation Productions will oversee the production of the Helldivers adaptation in collaboration with Lin’s own production banner, Perfect Storm Entertainment, alongside producers Hutch Parker, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash.
During CES 2025, Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, noted that Sony is planning to expand its IPs after the breakout success of The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Twisted Metal. Additionally, as per industry speculations, the game developers might not be heavily involved in the Helldivers movie production.
The screenplay writer Gary Dauberman is known for his work on horror-genre films, such as It and Annabelle. According to THR’s reporting, Lin, who is not a gamer himself, pitched his character-driven approach for the upcoming project. He aims to “find the humanity in the characters” while incorporating concurrent themes into the narrative, along with teasing a myth-centric world-building.
However, specific plotlines of the film have not been officially confirmed. Industry sources currently describe the film’s premise to center on the squad of elite Helldivers, the franchise’s signature shock-trooper unit dispatched to defend “Super Earth” from alien threats. The game’s world draws heavily from action-driven sci-fi elements and extraterrestrial beings such as Cyborgs, Bugs, Illuminate, and such.
Lin comes with the experience of directing million-dollar movies, such as Fast & Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious 6, and the last film of the modern Star Trek trilogy, Star Trek Beyond. Additionally, he is attached to the recently announced movie adaptation of the popular Japanese manga, One Punch Man, and the live-action production of the comic book, Brzrkr. With him in the direction, the production seems positioned to deliver a large-scale, action-packed, and emotionally grounded adaptation of Helldivers.
Given Helldivers 2’s commercial success and broad appeal, the project demonstrates that video-game-to-film adaptations remain a viable and commercially lucrative IP expansion strategy. Sony recently advanced in the production of a God of War live-action adaptation, underscoring the value of premium video game IPs.
As of now, the project lacks official confirmation on a potential release date, cast list, and narrative themes, leaving many of its creative choices open to speculation.
