Amazon Prime Video’s long-awaited God of War adaptation series has officially entered pre-production, with casting underway, according to new reports from Deadline. According to the report, famed director Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes of the series’ season 1. He is set to join the project’s writer, showrunner, and executive producer, Ronald D. Moore.
The update marks the project’s most significant movement since Amazon announced the series in late 2022 under Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions. While the project has long been in a developmental stage, Prime Video also introduced a two-season plan for the adaptation earlier this year, before starting the pre-production and casting for the father-son duo Kratos and Atreus.
The adaptation is based on the acclaimed PlayStation franchise, God of War, potentially, the Santa Monica Studio’s Norse-era reboot (2018) of the action franchise first launched in 2005. The game sold over 23M copies across PlayStation and PC (2022), becoming one of Sony’s most acclaimed first-party titles.
The GamePressure’s report highlighted that Amazon’s series could follow Kratos and Atreus’ storyline introduced in the 2018 title, rather than the earlier Greek myth arc. This narrative details Kratos and Atreus' journey to scatter Faye's ash.
Pre-Production of God of War: What’s Confirmed so far
While the Deadline report confirms that the production is already underway in Vancouver, it hasn’t revealed much information about the upcoming show. However, the tie with Emmy-winner Frederick E.O. Toye, known for critically acclaimed series like Shogun, Westworld, and Crimson Sky, promises a high-end genre experience to the production. Additionally, he has worked on another video game adaptation, Fallout.
Co-producer Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions together have also delivered recent video game adaptation hits, The Last of Us and Twisted Metal, signaling realistic worldbuilding and unadulterated adaptation of the famed franchise. Both companies will work closely with co-producer Amazon MGM Studios and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions for the project.
Maril Davis, Matthew Graham, Cory Barlog, Asad Qizilbash, Naren Shankar, Carter Swan, Roy Lee, Brad Van Arragon, and Hermen Hulst have joined the production as executive producers. Additionally, Jeff Ketcham, Ben McGinnis, Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, and Tania Lotia will serve as co-executive producers for the adaptation.
While reports state that the team has also started casting endeavors, no actors have been confirmed as of yet. The show has previously faced setbacks when showrunner, Rafe Judkins, and script writers exited the project in October 2024. As of now, potential release date, specific episode counts, and plot details remain unconfirmed; however, the two-season commitment reflects Amazon’s confidence in the IP’s commercial potential.
