Highlights

  • Sony may cease PC ports of major PlayStation games.
  • Ghost of Yotei and Saros are expected to remain PlayStation exclusives.
  • Live-service titles such as Marathon are still planned for release across multiple platforms.

Sony is reportedly scaling back plans to bring major PlayStation titles to PC as it reassesses its multiplatform strategy. According to a report by Bloomberg, people familiar with the matter said the company has been unimpressed with PC sales. They also expressed concern that wider availability could affect the PlayStation brand and hardware demand.

Sources said Sony Interactive Entertainment recently scrapped plans to port several internally developed titles to PC. These reportedly include Ghost of Yotei and other single-player games. The upcoming Saros is also expected to remain exclusive to PlayStation hardware.

Sony did not provide a comment when contacted by Bloomberg.

In recent years, Sony expanded its PC presence by releasing several PlayStation titles on the platform after their console launches. Games such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part I, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us Part II were among the releases brought to PC.

Sony PC Strategy Shifts Toward Live-Service Multiplatform Releases

Despite the reported change, Sony is still expected to release some titles on PC, particularly live-service or externally developed projects. Games including Kena: Scars of Kosmora, and Death Stranding 2 are expected to launch on PC this year.

Online titles such as Marathon will also continue releasing on multiple platforms.

Sources cited in the report indicated that some within PlayStation are concerned about releasing the company’s games on PC. They believe releasing its games on PC could weaken the console’s brand and potentially affect sales of the PlayStation 5 and future hardware.

Meanwhile, analysts estimate PlayStation games on Steam generated about $1.5 billion USD in revenue. However, sales of newer releases have declined compared with earlier ports.

If the shift continues, Sony’s approach would contrast with Microsoft, which releases franchises like Halo and Forza Horizon across platforms. Nintendo, meanwhile, continues to keep most of its games exclusive to its own hardware.
