Highlights

  • Nintendo has moved The Legend of Zelda movie release date to April 2027.
  • Production on the live-action adaptation wrapped in New Zealand after filming began in November 2025.
  • Reports suggest Nintendo could be planning a Zelda movie trilogy spanning six years.

Nintendo has changed the release date for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie again, this time moving the film forward by one week. The adaptation will now release worldwide on April 30, 2027, instead of its previously announced May 7, 2027, launch date.

Shigeru Miyamoto shared the update through Nintendo’s official Japanese X account. The film had earlier been delayed from March 2027 after Nintendo cited “production reasons” for shifting the release to May 2027.

In the announcement, Miyamoto stated that the production team is “working hard to deliver the film to everyone as soon as possible” and expressed appreciation for fans’ patience ahead of the film’s 2027 release.

Wes Ball’s Zelda Movie Plans and Trilogy Reports

Reports surrounding the adaptation have suggested Nintendo may be planning multiple films. Industry insider, Daniel Richtman, previously claimed that major cast members signed contracts tied to a trilogy planned over six years, though Nintendo has not publicly confirmed those claims.

Director Wes Ball previously described his approach to the adaptation as “something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.” He also told Entertainment Weekly that Hayao Miyazaki’s work influenced his vision for the movie.

The Legend of Zelda Movie Cast and Production Details

Production on the live-action adaptation began in New Zealand in November 2025, following Nintendo's and Arad Productions’ casting announcement. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link, while Bo Bragason has been cast as Zelda.

Nintendo previously released official images showing both actors in costume.

Wes Ball is known for The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Cinematographer Gyula Pados joined the project after previously collaborating with Ball on Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

In April 2026, Pados posted a production clapperboard image online to mark the end of filming. The image also offered another look at Ainsworth wearing Link’s outfit.
