Ubisoft is turning Motherbrain into a global generative AI (GenAI) entity designed to support gameplay innovation across its games. According to Insider Gaming, the initiative will be deployed across as many Ubisoft titles as possible.
Creative Houses are Ubisoft’s development groups that oversee major game franchises and projects. Core services provide shared technology, tools, and expertise across the company.
Motherbrain being positioned alongside these functions highlights the scale of Ubisoft’s GenAI push. It suggests the initiative is being treated as a company-wide development capability rather than a standalone research project.
Ubisoft Builds Shared GenAI Foundation for Future Games
Motherbrain will develop proprietary AI technology and middleware for generative gameplay, creating a shared foundation for Ubisoft’s studios. An internal announcement said the group will “continue to develop proprietary AI technology and middleware dedicated to generative gameplay” while supporting gameplay innovation across the company.
Xavier Manzanares, a 23-year Ubisoft veteran, will lead Motherbrain. He has worked as lead producer on the Mario + Rabbids series and is associated with Ubisoft’s canceled Zelda project. He has also led the company’s GenAI R&D efforts involving Teammates and Neo NPC.
Ubisoft’s GenAI work has already moved beyond research prototypes:
- Neo NPC, revealed at Game Developer Conference (GDC) 2024, explored AI-powered characters with natural-language and contextual interactions.
- Teammates, unveiled on Nov 21, 2025, became Ubisoft’s first playable GenAI research project. It introduced AI companions that respond to real-time voice commands, alongside the Jaspar AI assistant.
Ubisoft’s GenAI Push Comes Amid Broader Restructuring
Ubisoft developers reportedly now use GenAI across multiple stages of development, with AI heavily represented at the company’s latest internal GDC. The wider industry is pursuing similar applications, with Capcom also discussing its GenAI plans.
Motherbrain arrives while Ubisoft pursues its “third and final” restructuring phase, targeting an additional €180M (~$201M USD) in cost savings. The company also recently placed Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and The Division under Massive Entertainment (formerly Creative House 2).
The move could mark a significant shift in Ubisoft’s development strategy. Its real impact will depend on whether GenAI delivers new gameplay possibilities or primarily becomes another way to streamline game production.
Separately, Ubisoft is offering up to 75% off select titles, plus an extra 20% discount with code UBI40, through Oct 13, 2026.
