Highlights

  • US video game spending fell 21% in June 2026 to $4.5 billion, driven primarily by a Nintendo Switch 2 hardware comparison hangover.
  • EA Sports UFC 6 debuted at number one on the software charts, while gaming subscriptions emerged as the market's only growth segment, climbing 7%.
  • Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S defied the market slowdown with a 100% surge in dollar spending, keeping year-to-date industry figures relatively flat.

In a striking market shift between June 2025 and June 2026, total projected US video game spending fell by a fifth year-on-year, dropping from $5.7 billion USD to $4.5B. While a 21% dip looks alarming on paper, retail charts from analytics firm Circana reveal the decline is essentially a statistical hangover rather than a structural crisis. The drop was driven almost entirely by the natural cooling of Nintendo hardware sales following last June's historic Nintendo Switch 2 launch, leaving the underlying gaming economy stable.

According to Circana, revenue tumbled across all segments, with software spending dropping 12% to $3.88B and accessories falling 21% to $232M. Hardware took the heaviest blow, plunging 62% from $1B in June 2025 to just $383M a year later. Without a major console release this June, Nintendo hardware spending dropped 79% below its launch month total.

However, this figure remains healthy by historical standards, sitting comfortably above the $289M recorded two years prior. The Switch 2 easily kept its crown as June’s top-selling platform in both units and revenue, commanding a strong lead in 2026 year-to-date rankings. Sony’s PlayStation 5 ranked second, with spending down 19% from the previous year.

Against this broader pullback, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S consoles were the sole hardware bright spot, posting their strongest US sales month of 2026. Defying the slowdown, Xbox dollar spending surged by over 100% year-over-year, propelled by an 86% jump in unit sales, as per Gamesindustry.biz.

Beyond hardware, gaming subscriptions emerged as the market's only growth segment for the month, climbing 7% as players shift toward recurring digital services over one-off purchases. Looking at the first half of 2026 on a year-to-date basis, combined industry spending across hardware and software sits at $27.5B, which is essentially flat and just 1% behind last year's record-setting pace.

UFC 6 Found Immediate Success, Meccha Chameleon Debuted Second

On the software charts for the period of May 31 to July 4, 2026, Electronic Arts found immediate success with UFC 6, storming the chart to debut at number one across all platforms while leading PlayStation sales. In a major win for indie developers, lemorion_1224’s viral co-op sensation Meccha Chameleon debuted right behind it in second place, generating massive digital engagement.

Previous chart-topper 007 First Light dropped to third place after leading in May, while Nintendo’s newly released Star Fox (2026) debuted strongly at number four, becoming the month's best-selling game on Nintendo hardware.

Rounding out Circana's projected top ten games which incorporate both digital point of sale actuals and digital sales projections. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight fell two spots to fifth place, followed by Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream slipping one spot down to sixth. Racing hit Forza Horizon 6 slid five places and was ranked seventh.

Further down the chart, MLB: The Show 26 and Minecraft climbed to eighth and ninth place, respectively, while NBA 2K26 rose three spots to tenth. While these monthly charts highlight fresh summer favorites, survival horror hit Resident Evil Requiem held firmly onto its position as the best-selling game of 2026 year-to-date.

With subscription spending growing and a heavy slate of blockbuster releases scheduled for the autumn holiday season, experts anticipate total market revenue will easily rebound to close out the year.
