Highlights

  • Xbox is maintaining Fable’s Autumn 2026 release window despite reports of an internal delay linked to GTA VI.
  • The game may shift within the year or into 2027 if its launch falls too close to Rockstar’s November release.
  • Publishers are delaying release decisions until GTA VI’s schedule becomes clearer.

Xbox Game Studios is maintaining Fable’s Autumn 2026 release window despite growing speculation of an internal delay tied to Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI). Reports suggest the Playground Games reboot has been internally delayed, though a launch this year remains under consideration.

Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb said the game is still targeting 2026, though Microsoft is weighing the risk of launching too close to Rockstar’s November release. “Apparently, they’re still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI,” Grubb said. He also added that a slip beyond that window could push Fable toward December, potentially delaying it into 2027.

However, Xbox has not confirmed any delays.

The official Fable account reiterated its Autumn 2026 timing on X, even as industry scheduling remains fluid. The broad window was announced alongside the game’s full reveal in late January 2026.

Fable's Release Window Faces GTA VI Competition Pressure

The wider 2026 calendar underscores the challenge. Aside from Marvel’s Wolverine in September and GTA VI planned for November 19, few major releases are locked. Meanwhile, only Epic Mickey and SpongeBob Switch ports are currently slated for October.

Publishers are reportedly holding dates until Rockstar’s timeline stabilizes.

Internally, Xbox is managing a crowded slate. Forza Horizon 6 is set for May, while Gears of War: E-Day and Halo: Campaign Evolved are also expected within the year. The lineup builds toward the original Xbox’s 25th anniversary on Nov 15, 2026.

Fable represents Playground Games’ shift into open-world RPG development. General manager, and game director, Ralph Fulton, said the studio is “really faithful to the spirit of the classic Lionhead trilogy.” He also added that the reboot is designed to serve as both a continuation and a new starting point.

The final release decision will likely hinge on GTA VI’s schedule, as publishers aim to avoid direct holiday competition. A recent Rockstar data breach tied to a third-party system adds uncertainty, despite the company stating it does not affect operations, reinforcing caution around release timing.
