Highlights

  • Busan lodging prices reportedly tripled after BTS announced their ARIRANG concerts.
  • Price gouging in the region has prompted some fans to reconsider spending at local businesses during the concert week.
  • To counter such acts and lodging crisis, Buddhist temples across Busan and nearby areas will open affordable or free temple stays for visiting BTS fans.

BTS’ ARIRANG world tour shows in Busan were supposed to be a huge cultural celebration, however the two-date residency spanning June 12 and 13 has triggered a price hike wave across accommodations in the region. The Busan concerts will coincide with the group’s debut anniversary, making the event even more special for both fans and the members.

The BTS shows will reportedly also have the backing of the Busan Metropolitan Government to arrange extensive supporting festivities alongside the BTS THE CITY 'ARIRANG' experience announced on May 18. Nevertheless, amidst such grand preparations, these extreme costs are affecting fans, turning their anticipation and sentiment of the band’s homecoming into a logistical nightmare.

Reports from The Korea Times confirmed that a joint regulatory investigation of 135 accommodations in Busan revealed that average room rates have more than doubled after BTS made their concert announcement on April 13. Consequently, hotel prices have almost tripled during concert week, while motel costs have risen past three times their usual rates.

Fans Report Abrupt Cancellations Amid Lodging Price Surge

The financial inflation seen in Busan is staggering. A standard ₩60,000 (~ $40 USD) room’s price skyrocketed to ₩760,000 (~ $500). Elsewhere, lodging options of ₩100,000 (~ $66) hiked their costs to ₩750,000 (~ $493), and ₩300,000 (~ $197) luxury suites reached an astronomical ₩1.8 million (~ $1,184) fee. Reacting to this price outrage, fans online reported that operators suddenly canceled bookings done long ago by stating reasons like “overbooking” or “remodeling.” However, fans confirmed later finding those same rooms to be relisted at extreme premium prices.

Further reporting from The Korea Times noted that after the price gouging trends, negative fan response was immediate, with some of them turning towards an organized local spending boycott. One fan online reportedly vowed to spend “zero” amount in Busan, with many others planning immediate day trips while also pledging even to purchase and bring water from Seoul. Aiming for crisis control, the municipal authorities, alongside other associated bodies, launched a separate inspection under the Public Health Control Act to penalize non-compliant businesses.

Buddhist Temples Open Their Doors to Visiting BTS Fans

Amid this pressing commercial issue, an unexpected alternative has emerged from the region’s spiritual community. The Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism will open many regional monasteries to arriving fans. According to a report from The Korea Times, participating sites include Beomeo, Naewonjeong, Hongbeop, and Seonam in Busan; Seongju and Daegwang in nearby Changwon; Tongdo in Yangsan; and Pyochung in Miryang.

These Buddhist sanctuaries will offer their temple-stay quarters either entirely free of charge or at minimal budget prices. However, travelers must strictly follow monastic guidelines and communal living rules. Apart from the lodging facilities, the monasteries plan to offer traditional meals, cultural experiences, and interpretation support for foreign visitors. The temple authorities hope this gesture of traditional hospitality will help beat the market exploitation, guaranteeing that global visitors leave the city with warm memories.
