  • 1.02M foreign tourists in Busan in Q1 2026, the fastest since 2014, makes it a rising Asian travel hub.
  • Tourism revenue hit ₩235.5B (+26.4%), driven by diversified inflows led by Taiwan, China, Japan, and the US.
  • Cruise growth, transit upgrades, and K-pop live events like BTS Arirang world tour are set to speed up Busan’s tourism momentum into Q2 2026.

South Korea’s city Busan, hometown to BTS members Jimin and Jungkook, is no longer living in the shadows of Seoul, the capital city of the country. In Q1 2026, the southern port of the city recorded around 1.02 million foreign tourists. Busan has crossed the million-visit mark in a rapid manner, which is a first since it officially began tracking arrivals in 2014. By surpassing last year’s staggering pace by a full month, Busan is emerging as a popular destination in the Asian travel industry.

Busan’s Tourism Surge Driven by Diverse Global Demand

According to a report by The Korea Times, foreign tourist expenditure reached ₩235.5 billion (~ $160 million USD) in the first three months of the year. This marked a 26.4%increase over the same period in 2023. The data unveils a varied demographic with Taiwan leading the influx by nearly 209,000 visitors, followed by China. The dragon nation contributed with an influx of 197,958 visitors, while Japan and the US accounted for 130,217 and 81,437, respectively. In fact, countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines have also contributed to significant numbers, thus bolstering Busan’s pursuit of market diversification. The city aims to attain the goal of 5 million annual foreign visitors by 2028.

This expansion is a result of a strategic overhaul of visitor logistics. Notably, the “Visit Busan Pass” which provides packages related to transportation and attractions, saw a 65% jump. This climb came after pickup locations were expanded to Incheon and Gimpo International Airports and linked with digital payment giants Line Pay and Alipay.

Cruise Boom and Transit Upgrades Boost the Growth of BTS Jimin and Jungkook’s Hometown

Interestingly, the most competitive gains were found at the docks. Busan’s maritime sector has been re-energized by a “fly-rail-and-cruise” homeport program. This program streamlines the conversion for travelers flying into Incheon and taking the KTX high-speed rail directly to their cruise ships. The impact was instant with Chinese port calls climbing from 31 to 89 in the first quarter, while passenger numbers more than tripled to 180,388. Arrivals for cruise are estimated to be 800,000 this year, with Busan expected to set more than double its 2023 maritime volume.

The momentum is projected to speed-up further in Q2 with a massive rush of tourists expected on June 12 and 13 for the Busan shows of Arirang World Tour. As reported by the Korea Times, Acting Mayor Kim Kyung-duk observed that the city’s growing brand value is now converting into high-scale economic benefits for both the industry and local people. Such numbers further solidified Busan’s position as a global tourism booster.
