The BTS concert in Mexico City was no less than a concert residency or a global pop culture event. In fact, it appeared to be more of a diplomatic occasion, bolstering international relations. After nine years, the group returned to Mexico City with the ARIRANG world tour, which took over the Estadio GNP Seguros for a three-night run on May 7, 9, and 10. Notably, the tour, coupled with the new release from the group, is the reason for HYBE to hit a record-breaking mark in Q1 2026.
BTS Boosts Diplomatic Ties, Fuels Unprecedented Demand
BTS’ concert demand was so high that 2.1 million fans vied for 150,000 available seats (all sold out), revealed the Ticketmaster Mexico data cited by Billboard. The frenzy resulted in rapid sales of 136,400 tickets in under an hour, while the Los Angeles Times reported that scalpers demanded $3,500 USD per concert seat. The scalping issue originated even before the presales began, thus prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to intervene. As Mexico City residents asked for more BTS concert days, Sheinbaum, noting the demand, issued a formal request to the South Korean government for additional dates. However, the plea was ultimately declined due to tour logistics.
Nevertheless, the warmth from Mexican ARMYs remained the same. Notably, an estimated 50,000 fans filled the Zócalo within just a few hours of the announcement that BTS was going to meet the fans from the National Palace balcony. “I love you, I adore you,” said BTS leader RM to the crowd in Spanish. The band spent around 40 minutes with President Sheinbaum, while she invited the group back for a 2027 engagement.

BTS ARIRANG World Tour 2026 Mexico City: Stadium Spectacle and Economic Impact
The BTS Mexico City concert atmosphere was electric. According to AJU Press, BTS performed in a stadium that was built 2,240 meters above sea level. The group began the performance with Hooligan before transitioning into a broader setlist that combined new releases like Swim with catalog hits like Fake Love. As seen in most of BTS ARIRANG concerts that have been held until now, the massive sing-along of Arirang, the Korean folk song embedded within Body to Body, showcased the tour’s cultural fusion.
AJU Press reports that the BTS drew 65,000 people in its first show, with South Korean media agency Yonhap reporting the arrival of 150,000 fans overall for three sold-out concerts. The “fan festival” spilled directly into the streets and areas outside the main venue as almost 40,000 “ticketless” fans gathered to just listen to them, as noted by India Today. Furthermore, Yonhap also reported that on the weekend nights (May 9 and 10), the number of these “ticketless fans” reached 35,000. The tour is projected to generate about $107.5 million in economic impact, encompassing tickets, transport, accommodation, and food expenditures, as per data from the Mexico City Chamber of Commerce. In fact, if reports are to be believed, the concerts could generate $88M solely from ticket sales.
As BTS closed the concerts with their special songs, anchored by an emotional rendition of the 2015 track Hold Me Tight for the opening night, a clear industry indication was seen. It noted that Mexico is no longer an optional stop but a mandatory one. For BTS, even though they are a decade late to perform in the region, the demand did not just remain the same, but grew, proving that their influence only intensified amidst the wait.
