The official X account for Witch on the Holy Night released the first individual character visuals for the upcoming Demon Slayer studio fantasy film. The reveal offers fans another look at what could be Ufotable’s (the studio behind the Demon Slayer franchise) next big theatrical release.
Ufotable announced the Witch on the Holy Night back in December 2021, with a teaser drop after two years in 2023. As the Demon Slayer film trilogy gears up for the second instalment, the studio is finally planning to release the movie in 2026, five years after the announcement.
The official post shared updated artwork for three central characters: Aoko Aozaki, Alice Kuonji, and Soujyuro Shizuki. The project adapts Type-Moon’s visual novel Mahōtsukai no Yoru, centering on an unexpected journey of a teenage boy and two modern witches in 1980s Japan.
Demon Slayer Studios’ New Film Expands Type-Moon Partnership
The Witch on the Holy Night anime film marks another significant collaboration between Ufotable and Type-Moon, following projects tied to the Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works franchise. In the latest update, Returning cast from the visual novel's remastered edition will voice the main trio.
Haruka Tomatsu voices protagonist Aoko Aozaki, while Kana Hanazawa voices Alice Kuonji, Aoko’s sorcery teacher. Yusuke Kobayashi voices Sojuro Shizuki, the teenage boy who witnesses Aoko and Alice’s magician abilities while they fight off a puppet that attacked them in a town called Misaki.
The original visual novel was written by Kinoko Nasu and functions as a prequel to Tsukihime, which centers on Aoko’s student Shiki Tohno. The Witch on the Holy Night was first released for Windows in April 2012, as a kinetic novel with a linear narrative and few player choices. Later, Aniplex introduced an enhanced remastered version with voice acting for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in December 2022, with a Steam port following one year later, in 2023.
