Highlights

  • EJAE's World Cup performance debut transformed a global stage into a milestone moment for Korean representation.
  • Behind her performance lies a personal World Cup memory which dates back to 2002, when South Korea was the hosting nation.
  • After her appearance, a broader K-pop rollout will continue throughout FIFA 2026 with performances from Lisa and BTS.

Singer-songwriter EJAE officially made history at Estadio Azteca, after she performed live at the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony. The KPop Demon Hunters-famed personality sang the tournament’s official theme song, DNA, along with legendary Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. The high-stakes opening ceremony aired globally ahead of the Mexico vs. South Africa match, which formally kicked off the 2026 football World Cup.

EJAE Makes World Cup History with Korean Lyrics

Standing center stage, EJAE commanded the venue with Korean lyrics which she had penned herself: “Even if I fall again, I will rise once more. This is more than just a game. It's our DNA.” Notably, it marked the first time that the language has ever been featured live in an official World Cup anthem, that too on an opening night. “Being a part of the official FIFA World Cup anthem means so much to me,” she said in an earlier statement via FIFA. “It's especially meaningful because I was able to write Korean lyrics in the song…representing Korea on this stage is such an honor,” she added further.

After the ceremony concluded, EJAE expressed immense gratitude for the milestone, acknowledging that the scale of the event was still sinking in. According to Maeil Business, she said, “I still can't believe what just happened,” moments after stepping off the stage. "It was a truly honorable moment," the Golden-singer added further.

KPop Demon Hunters Singer Says South Korea's 2002 World Cup Inspired Her

According to K-media outlets, her performance draws direct inspiration from her memories of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea. Reportedly, EJAE recalled the sight of a united city where strangers hugged and celebrated in the streets, noting that this specific feeling of togetherness is what defines the World Cup for her. FIFA also confirmed that the theme song, DNA, embodies this exact spirit of solidarity for the iconic tournament. In an evolved approach this year, the number of competing teams has been increased to 48; they will be playing across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
