Highlights

  • Kyoto Animation announced The Credits Roll Into the Sea anime movie for a 2027 theatrical release.
  • The award-nominated source manga explores aging, grief, creativity, and cinema through 65-year-old protagonist Umiko Chino.
  • The Credits Roll Into the Sea movie adaptation reflects the anime industry’s growing focus on mature, prestige-driven dramas.

Kyoto Animation has announced an anime movie adaptation of John Tarachine’s manga The Credits Roll Into the Sea, while scheduling it for theatrical release in 2027. The project will be directed by Taichi Ishidate, known for Violet Evergarden and Beyond the Boundary.

A teaser trailer dropped alongside the announcement on May 10, 2026. The announcement adds another high-profile literary adaptation to Kyoto Animation’s post-2019 production slate, following works like Violet Evergarden: The Movie (2020) and the TV series CITY The Animation (2025).

Shochiku will distribute the film in Japan; an international distributor or streamer has not been named. The teaser, however, features the ‘2027 Roadshow’ tagline.

The Credits Roll Into the Sea Anime Movie: A Mature Story and Prestige Adaptation

The source material, The Credits Roll Into the Sea or Umi ga Hashiru Endroll manga, ranked first in the women readers’ category in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022. The manga also received 27th and 29th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize nominations and surpassed 1M copies in circulation by July 2025.

The Credits Roll Into the Sea follows a 65-year-old widow, Umiko Chino, who reconnects with cinema through a younger filmmaking student, Kai. The manga drew attention for its subject matter centering on aging, creative inspiration, grief, and isolation.

Both Chino and Kai are more drawn towards how audiences react to a film than to the film itself, which ultimately leads Chino to enroll in film school to create her own cinema. What sets The Credits Roll Into the Sea anime movie apart is an elderly female protagonist, a rarity in commercial manga and anime adaptations.

As of yet, a detailed production staff and cast list has not been revealed; however, the teaser trailer shows KyoAni’s signature animation style, featuring bright colors, natural landscapes, and first-person point of view scenes. The Credits Roll Into the Sea film arrives at a juncture when Japanese studios have started investing in critically recognized manga with broad demographic appeal rather than relying solely on action-driven franchise properties.

Adaptations like Look Back, The Colors Within, and The World is Dancing are creating demand for mature anime dramas. A prestige adaptation with a famed director and Shochiku's distribution network positions The Credits Roll Into the Sea to compete in the non-franchise anime films space.
