Highlights

  • Sony Interactive Entertainment and Arc System Works have unveiled the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls anime-style opening movie.
  • The cinematic embraces anime-inspired visuals and 2.5D animation, featuring the theme song Stronger as One.
  • The reveal comes alongside the announcement of Phoenix Cyclops as the first Year 1 DLC character.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Arc System Works released the opening animated movie for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls during a San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 23. The cinematic was produced by anime studio Sanzigen and arrives alongside the announcement of Phoenix Cyclops as the first Year 1 downloadable character.

Fighting Souls’ opening movie blends traditional fighting game introductions with the visual language of early-2000s anime. Producer Takeshi Yamanaka said the team wanted to combine “the spirit of classic fighting game openings” with the energy of anime openings.

Yamanaka praised Sanzigen’s work on the opening movie, saying the studio “continues to push the boundaries of high-quality 2.5D expression” and delivered a “remarkable job.” The sequence features the theme song Stronger as One. The singers were Japanese rock artists Keiko Terada from SHOW-YA and mayu from NEMOPHILA.

The lyrics were composed by Kanata Okajima, with composition by MEG (MEGMETAL). The cinematic sequences featured in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ Episode Mode.

Anime Aesthetics Become a Differentiator in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Soul

Marvel Tōkon is the latest example of Japanese developers reshaping Western comic book properties through anime production techniques. Daisuke Suzuki directed Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ cinematic sequence.

Rather than relying solely on cinematic realism, the game pairs Arc System Works’ stylized visuals with Sanzigen’s expertise in 2.5D animation, a production style the studio has previously used across projects. Sanzigen’s prior credits include Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers and the Initial D Legend films.

The reveal lands one day before the game’s 72-hour open beta, which began on July 24 across PlayStation 5, Steam,  and the Epic Games Store. The full release is scheduled for August 6 on PS5 and PC, per the PlayStation Blog.

Additionally, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is also hosting a collaboration with Insomniac's Marvel’s Wolverine and bringing in-game costumes. Yamanaka also stated that the company will release a special countdown illustration, created by the development team, along with a “lineup of Marvel guest artists.”
