Highlights

  • Wit Studio's THE ONE PIECE anime is set for a February 2027 global release on Netflix.
  • Produced by Wit Studio, the remake adapts the East Blue saga with faster pacing, dense-story telling, and extended episode runtimes.
  • Netflix's One Piece remake project aims to modernize the anime for new audiences while testing global demand for legacy IP reboots.

Netflix has confirmed a February 2027 premiere window for WIT Studio's THE ONE PIECE, a modernized remake of the long-running One Piece anime. The original One Piece anime, produced by Toei Animation, has surpassed 1,100 episodes since its 1999 launch, making it one of the longest-running series in television history.

THE ONE PIECE remake revisits Eiichiro Oda’s East Blue saga with a new production approach that relatively shortens the runtime with tighter narrative and pacing. The series will launch as a complete season drop, with all seven episodes available simultaneously on Netflix worldwide.

THE ONE PIECE Season 1: A Shift From Toei's Structure

THE ONE PIECE Season 1 will adapt the first 50 chapters of the manga, covering the East Blue Saga up to Luffy's first encounter with Sanji at the Baratie sea restaurant. At roughly seven chapters per episode, the dense pacing represents a deliberate shift from Toei's approach, in which most manga chapters were routinely stretched across multiple episodes.

Wit Studio President George Wada previously informed that Netflix’s THE ONE PIECE will follow modern anime structuring, breaking away from the classic format, which is also visible in episode runtime.

The entire season one will be 300 minutes long. Wit Studio’s structure makes each episode roughly 42 minutes long, more than double the runtime of a standard anime episode.

WIT Studio's THE ONE PIECE Production

WIT Studio, known for early seasons of Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga, is leading the remake, intending to capture new audiences who criticize One Piece’s length and early animation blunders. Masashi Koizuka, known for directing episodes of Attack on Titan and the film Moonrise, helms the series.

THE ONE PIECE series’ composition is handled by Taku Kishimoto, whose work credits include Sakamoto Days and Ranking of Kings. Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda oversee character design and chief animation direction, respectively.

While no footage has been released, WIT Studio stated to Dexerto that the production team's work is “already translating into powerful animation.” The release update came with a new concept art featuring Partys Bar in Windmill Village, centered around Shanks and protagonist Luffy.

For Netflix, THE ONE PIECE adds to a growing One Piece slate that includes original One Piece anime seasons, live-action One Piece, and a Lego special. The project also reflects how streaming platforms and studios are revisiting established IP rather than relying solely on new titles.

While remakes and reboots are common in Hollywood, Netflix and WIT Studio's venture will become one of the first large-scale anime remakes, especially of a commercially and globally dominant IP. It also becomes a test for the production partners; if they succeed, THE ONE PIECE can reintroduce One Piece to a global audience at scale. However, audience expectation and legacy sentiment pose significant barriers.
