Wit Studio Reveals Netflix’s The One Piece Targets New Audiences
George Wada confirms tighter pacing and updated visuals for Netflix's remake of the 1,000-plus episode One Piece series.
Highlights
- Netflix’s One Piece remake will condense the 1,000+ episode series with tighter pacing, aiming to attract new viewers.
- One Piece reboot will adopt contemporary anime structuring and visuals.
- The reboot aligns with Netflix’s broader franchise strategy.
Wit Studio President George Wada has confirmed that The One Piece, the studio's Netflix-backed remake of the long-running One Piece series, will feature tighter pacing, modern artistic direction, and a condensed structure. Wada, who is also the President and CEO of Production I.G, positioned the project as a modern way to reintroduce Eiichiro Oda’s story.
The One Piece remake will revisit the original East Blue saga. Wada emphasized that the remake was planned due to Oda’s dissatisfaction with the 1999 adaptation of One Piece, which Oda thought might not engage younger audiences.
Netflix’s The One Piece Will Follow Modern Anime Structuring
Netflix’s new One Piece adaptation is expected to follow the condensed structure of modern anime. Wada said that it will be tight, “without unnecessary stretching,” and will combine strong storytelling and modern pacing.
During the conversation with Ai SHOW, Wada emphasized that Wit Studio intends to restructure One Piece’s serialization while remaining faithful to the source material and Toei’s adaptation. In terms of artistic standards, Wada chose Wit Studio's current slate of Attack on Titan, SPY x FAMILY, and Vinland Saga, as the remake's quality baseline.
Wada noted that advances in animation technology and evolving audience expectations are shaping the reboot’s direction. He also hinted at a possible late-night broadcast timeslot for The One Piece, in contrast to Toei’s children's programming broadcast window.
Along with a modern vision for One Piece adaptation, Wada also responded to prior fan backlash over AI-generated elements in the Netflix production. He mentioned that Wit Studio and parent company Production I.G are maintaining a wait-and-see approach on AI, citing unresolved legal and creative implications.
For Netflix, the remake extends an established One Piece investment that already spans a live-action adaptation renewed for a third season. However, no release date has been confirmed.
