Takashi Okazaki Wins Juried Emmy for Star Wars: Visions Short

The Television Academy has named Japanese manga artist and character designer Takashi Okazaki a winner of the juried awards at the 78th Emmy Awards. The academy announced on Aug 12 that Okazaki won Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for his work in Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 – The Duel: Payback.

Okazaki, best known as the creator of Afro Samurai, was honored in the category as a character designer. The animation award simultaneously recognized several other artists across several disciplines, including achievements in storyboarding and art direction.

Uzoma Dunkwu won for his character design work in Marvel Animation’s Eyes of Wakanda. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal received two honors for storyboarder David Krentz and Scott Wills’ art direction. The Mighty Nein got recognized for Howard Chen’s background design in the series.

Unlike competitive Emmy races, juried awards do not have nominees and are decided by peer panels that evaluate entries against a fixed standard of excellence. Outstanding Motion Design produced no winner this year, a reminder that Emmy’s jury honor rewards specific craft.

Takashi Okazaki's The Duel: Payback- A Sequel Built on Feudal Japan and Star Wars Lore 

The Duel: Payback continues the story introduced in Star Wars: Visions Volume 1’s acclaimed short The Duel. Produced by Kamikaze Douga in collaboration with ANIMA, the sequel reunites director Takanobu Mizuno and expands the tale of the wandering Ronin, as he confronts the Grand Master, a mechanically augmented former Jedi bent on revenge. 

The Duel: Payback’s stylized black-and-white aesthetic, inspired by classic samurai cinema, remains central to the short’s visual identity. In his Men’s Journal interview, Okazaki described that he has designed the antagonist as a Light Vader, a mirror to how Anakin Skywalker might have turned out differently. 

The short premiered on Disney+ on Oct 29, 2025, as a part of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3, which extended two more Volume 1 storylines. Launched by Lucasfilm in 2021, the Visions banner reimagines the Star Wars universe through standalone animated shorts from different studios, with different visual and art styles.

The recognition marks another high-profile achievement for Lucasfilm’s anime anthology that has steadily built its recognition since its 2021 debut. Volume 1’s The Duel received an Emmy nomination in 2022, while Screecher’s Reach from Volume 2 won the Individual Achievement in Animation award in 2024. 

Okazaki’s win is not the only Emmy presence for the anthology this year. The Television Academy’s Primetime nominations already include Black, in the Outstanding Animated Program category. Directed by Shinya Ohira at david production, Black is another anime short from Star Wars: Visions Volume 3.

Primetime Emmy winners are scheduled to be announced on Sep 14, with the ceremony airing live on NBC. The juried honors will be presented across Sep 5 and 6 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Instead of a live broadcast, it will be edited into a single broadcast airing on Sep 12 on FXX and Hulu.
