Lucasfilm and Production I.G confirmed that Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi will premiere on Aug 5, 2026, on Disney+ and Hulu. The release date was confirmed alongside a new trailer at a dedicated Anime Expo panel, titled First Look | Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi, on July 2.
The series adapts the ‘Ninth Jedi’ short released with the Star Wars: Visions anthology’s Volume 1 in 2021. The Ninth Jedi panel screened the limited series’opening episode in Japanese with English subtitles and introduced its creative leads in a panel, including supervising director Kenji Kamiyama.
Notably, Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi is the first dedicated anime series from the Visions narrative. It will feature legendary lightsaber Lah Zhima’s daughter, “Kara’s newest adventure in a galaxy far, far away.”
The Ninth Jedi Builds on one of Visions’ Most Popular Stories
The show launches under a new ‘Star Wars: Visions Presents’ banner, which Lucasfilm said will house longer-form stories from the Star Wars: Visions anthology’s shorts. It was announced back in 2025, during the Star Wars Celebration Japan event.
As per StarWars.com, The Ninth Jedi anime picks up from the two existing Visions entries: the Volume 1 short The Ninth Jedi and its Volume 3 sequel, The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope. It will follow Lah Kara as she continues on a quest to save her father with new Jedi allies.
The Ninth Jedi anime series is set in a distant future, “long after the Empire and the Rebel Alliance.” The series introduces General Nawaam, a masked antagonist the creative team has described as loosely modeled on popular antagonists Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader.
“A main [theme] of The Ninth Jedi is that things aren’t always black and white, dark and light,” said Kamiyama, the creator, supervising director, and script supervisor, during an interview. The series is produced by Star Wars: Visions producer Hitoshi Itō.
Popular anime director Shunsuke Tada is directing the series, with Production I.G producing. Tada is known for directing Kuroko's Basketball and Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Collision.
For Production I.G, The Ninth Jedi series formalizes the studio’s role since Star Wars: Visions' debut in 2021. I.G worked alongside Studio Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Science SARU, and other houses on the anthology’s first nine shorts.
